Scientist rarely keep the data secret. It's the basis of peer review. There's a reason why open access journals (PLoS One) are getting so popular, scientists want to be known and publish. In my experience, ego is a currency much more valuab

I just got a Galaxy S2 and it's a really good phone. I've shown it to iPhone users and they were impressed by the quality of the screen and the fact that it's so light. The DLNA App is really cool, you can broadcast your movies, pictures, e

Depends on what you do. I work in data analysis and our datasets are enormous and since RAM is cheaper than time, we load as much as we can in RAM. 16GB, 6 cores + SSD are standard issue. :-)

Only if you lower the price (within reason) and you don't get more customers... People were buying cars before Ford, but more people bought them when they got cheaper.

I was researching GPS receivers for an high altitude balloon and most receivers stop working at more than 18km OR at 500m/s. Some manufacturers misinterpreted the restriction. Instead of OR it should be AND. If you look around high altitude

They don't say why or where those users are going. If the users aren't going anywhere else, they just decided that Facebook weren't for them. This might be alright for Facebook because I guess they want committed users that log on the site

I think the most useful application of this technology(except entertainment) would be conference calls. Even with a polycom conference phone, you still have to concentrate to follow the conversation. It's even worse when people don't wait t

I think everybody hates meetings that are not focused. From my own experience, the worse meetings are when it's not relevant to my projects, workload or interests.

I'm curious about the performance and scalability of those database. Right now at work we have a MSSQL server with 32 CPU, SSDs and 128GB RAM and I was wondering if a graph database would be better. Our dataset is very peculiar, we have abo

Hi, I'm the one that did this map. We do semantic and field centric maps all the time and they get no attention. This map got worldwide press for some simple reasons: -you can see historic connections (links between Europe and Africa) -it u

I know that it happens a lot in seasonal industries like tourism. Especially where there's no other industries. If your state/country has a pretty comprehensive social safety net (like here in Quebec), it's not unheard off.

I think it might be a bit early to write Dubai off. Maybe the overbuilding will drive the rent down and attract businesses. The middle-east seem to be a very good emerging new market. I'm pretty sure that innovation and real solid businesse

Still, if you're a business making money developing in flash. 1200$ is nothing. Some middlewares are 10x or 100x more. But for an hobbyist, I agree.

I think Adobe is starting to get it with Flex. Flex is really nice to develop BI widgets and dashboards. We use it to present interactive data to our clients. I can whip up a dashboard binded to a DB in a matters of hours. I'm not sure that

I would not be surprised if Chipworks wasn't paid for this article. It might have been a PR project. At work we sometime do this to get our company in the news.

I agree but you should not be using a VPS if you are a high CPU user. You use a dedicated server for that. Most shared providers will charge you more if you use more CPU or require that you upgrade to a dedicated server. I'm pretty sure tha

You're right but in this case the user is a freeloader. He can use more than his 1/8 share of CPU time but others can't use his 1/8 share.

My perception is that VPS aren't for high-CPU, high-IO or high-memory servers. If one user is using too much CPU, he should be using a dedicated server. It's not like servers are expensive. You can get an entry level box on a fat pipe for 6

I'm not sure I understand. If there are 8 VPS on a machine and I'm always using 1/8 of CPU time, nobody else can't have access to this 1/8 share. I know that 1/8 of the CPU share "belongs" to me but it's a shared box and it's just being a g

"In all PR firms" was a little too much inclusive... :-) My comment was based on my experience when I was working for PR firms. Old school partners struggled to understand social media and asked to interns and employees to astroturf. Theses
