> I want there to be a choice. I agree. To be more nuanced, I think I want it to be a deliberate choice. Something someone stopped, thought about and said "yes, I want to do this". Because, they have made the tradeoff for thems

I've heard of nicotine as nootropic and I've been meaning to get the gum. Also, I believe it's about the only thing in cigarettes that is not carcinogenic.

I don't think it's surprising that an all out ban is not in place. The absurd part to me is know strong the industry is STILL. I think CVS is the only pharmacy that does not sell cigarettes, out of principle. Every other incentive

I don't really have a solution. I'm just making an observation. But as long as there is tech that connects people, you will see these effects. Regulation, moderation, etc are just nerfing the tech itself. A perspective shift I try

I say this as someone that has failed a bunch of time to quit smoking. Every time I smoke, I rationally know it's doing nothing for me, but can't help myself. It's not that good IMO. Not as clear a trade-off as alcohol. I thi

A cynical comment about regulation or curtailing this. Everyone agrees smoking causes health problems, is costly and doesn't offer anything. Smoking is regulated (taxes, labels, etc), but cigarettes are readily available everywhere - g

I gave up facebook about 3 years ago at this point. The main result was that the noise was turned down. As a consequence I could listen to myself better. I feel the same way about following news and really all ad-enabled content. The point

The onboarding is pretty intense. It removes that work from the team, but there is just a huge amount of information that you’ll never see again.

I work for Amazon. We’re in office once a week. Over the summer we got an intern. I was in the office everyday with that kid. No one told me. It felt like the right thing to do. Didn’t want to set the poor kid up for failure. He did good. I

Both the RF engineering and DSP programming sound immensely interesting. As a software dev with a EE background I’m thirsty for such opportunities. Where does one look for these jobs?

I've got a whiteboard on my wall with phrases I want to internalize and maybe turn into mantras. One of them is: "Guilt and regret kill many a man before their time." I regret many things in life. If I could go back I would d

As someone that struggles with stability regularly, I am concerned by this trend. Sure there are elements of our society that are adding stresses we did not have before. I'm not against that. The main concern I have is this becoming a

I could do that and then go work at the Costco food court. Somehow that doesn't feel any less like larping. On a serious note, how does one do that? It doesn't "feel" that way, but I know that's lifestyle inflation.

I work in FAANG and enjoy Costco. Sometimes in the food court I day-dream of working there. You know what you are doing, you use your body, you go home and don't think about it. I told my friend. He thought it sounded a lot like larpin

In such a scenario, I wouldn't put much thought into going to the bathroom. I think of it as setting my future self up for success. Go to bed early, go for groceries, have some food prepared, make plans to do something.

A book on this topic I really enjoy is Technopolis by Neil Postman. He makes the case that technology is a tradeoff and must be viewed as such. It hasn't been till recently that we built a society that is technology for technology sake
