As with used cars, 1-3 year old Thinkpads seem to be a pretty good sweet spot. New enough to be reasonably powerful / efficient / light, but old enough to be cheap and accessible. Corporate IT shops are often selling off batches o

Ugh, metacomment about this fucking page. This page implements its own custom scrolling behavior that tries (but fails) to mimic the smooth scrolling behavior that is default in most web browsers. It probably feels like something is slightl

Yeah, I agree. I don't have any horses in this race (anymore), and I don't really have a strong opinion on whether I think he's likely right or wrong... I just find his writing on the topic amusing.

I don't actually think it's a bad choice... but that may say more about the state of what's available than about this particular chip. The Cortex-M version of TrustZone is still fairly new, and these M33 devices are some of t

FWIW, their choice of microcontroller (LPC55s, which is a Cortex-M33 w/ crypto peripherals and TrustZone) doesn't seem completely terrible. There's still a lot of things that need to go right for the whole system to be secu

Because you want the drivers and hardware quirk fixes that the oem included, just not the bloatware/malware that they were paid to include. Not all hardware is as friendly as Linux on a Thinkpad... Sometimes a clean install would leave

Apparently I've been confusing Haxe with Facebook's Hack/HHVM for years, and just assumed it wasn't something I'd be interested in. But this... actually looks pretty neat!

SSH tunnels are my favorite tool for NAT-busting. I always have to look up the cryptic syntax, but with one strategically placed Raspberry Pi, you can basically get from anywhere to anywhere. And it works just as well on a locked down cor

Having used both, I can tolerate Apple's glass overlay, but I don't prefer it. But credit where it's due... it is nice to be able to take a damp rag to it, vs. having a mild heart attack any time someone gets their fingers

You're really only stuck with a glossy laptop display if you insist on buying one from Apple. Some of the flashier models from the Apple wannabe manufacturers are starting to go glossy or have a glass overlay, especially if they have a

Amusingly, things sort of went the other way in microcontroller land. You had SPI, which has a clock and data pin. That got faster and faster. Then there was QSPI (quad SPI) with four data pins, so you could shovel more data per clock, e.g.

I agree that this is the correct approach, and even do this myself sometimes. I still find it irksome that what costs ~$100 and takes 15 minutes on a Thinkpad costs ~$1000 and takes a week on a Mac.

They're not really app stores, but community-managed free software repositories (e.g. Debian) work astoundingly well next to the shit-show that is every commercial app store I've ever seen.

You're confusing DoH in "friendly" browsers like Firefox, where you and I might deliberately turn it on to thwart ISP shenanigans. In that case, it's good that DoH is hard to filter and looks like all other TLS traffic.
