I would say go for it. Hadoop is becoming more of a norm in industry and I can tell you from personal experience that having prior hands-on Hadoop work makes your resume pop a little more. Even better is if you're able to muck around in cor

I remember having to resist the urge to map/reduce everything in interview questions :P. Somehow, I don't think interviewers want to hear how you'd use a cannon to solve a tiny problem.

Obligatory question: does it have support for vi-like bindings? Also, what about wireless keyboards?

Seriously, another sale? My poor wallet... I'm going to pick up Clojure Programming ( http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920013754.do ) after hearing so many good things about it.

It seems like a strategic acquisition. LinkedIn looks poised to be expanding more into business operations/communications, especially given their previous acquisition of CardMunch. I can definitely see them trying to position themselves as

This is precisely the reason why I keep up with Quora. I've seen so many individuals of note from the industry answering questions on it and it really gives a nice one-degree of separation kind of perspective. It's kind of cool to know that

I highly recommend using symlinks to synchronize dotfiles with a locally cloned repo. That way, you can make changes to the dotfiles sitting in your home directory and it'll be reflected in your repo should you want to commit those changes.

Agreed, and I'd like to see what this competition will do with respect to McMaster-Carr. For a school design project, I had to order parts from a website and McMaster-Carr had by far the best website of any vendor. From a cursory glance, th

Brand name. Instagram is very well loved on the iPhone by many users and has been something Android users wanted. Anecdotally, my friends who use Instagram typically verbify the word as well, e.g., "I'm going to Instagram this cup of coffee

I'm not sure if this was intended by design or not, but why did you decide to put everything into one .scala file? I know Scala allows you to define multiple objects/classes in a file but it is pretty long and it would be pretty difficult t

At my day job, I code on a medium to large codebase with business requirements and meetings and whatnot, less of what I'd consider "hacking". Late at night, however, that's when I become more alive and I feel like I'm hacking out things on

Agree. Some of the performance tuning with Hadoop could only be done if you knew how it worked underneath and if you know how the clusters are set up. I'm also not sure if Pig/Scalding/Scoobi can do this already, but it'd also be nice if th

Having written MR jobs in the original Java format, I can tell you that it's quite valuable to do so before learning a DSL like Scalding or Pig. I found http://www.michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubun... to be a very good tut

My biggest gripe with the App Store (both iOS and Mac App Stores) is that you can't sort what you see by downloads, ratings, or other metrics. There's no granularity with the way the user sifts through the App Store, just what Apple deems t

The nice thing about having new Vim posts every week or so is that I've always learned something new about it each time, whether it's a new shortcut or plugin or whatever. The depth (and appeal) of vim is such that you'd never really stop l

Agreed. The icon buttons would have been fine had they colorized them in some manner. It's a lot easier to distinguish in that manner. I find myself confusing the "archive" and "move to" buttons far too often when working quickly.

From what I've read [1], Valve employs the desk-on-wheels configuration to great success. The higher-order function to this is that teams can be fluid and the process for reconfiguring for new projects is as easy as wheeling your desk aroun

I am of the school of thought where Heroku and other PaaS offerings are good for prototypes, where you'd throw up some simple apps on the short term. If you need to scale up, then you'd consider hosting it elsewhere and where you'd have mor

Agree. I don't see how you could take "brogramming" seriously, it's just a meme. At my company it's a running joke. That said, if you do happen to meet someone who takes it seriously and lives that "life", then they're dumber than you think
