Ironically, I was just reading through some PostgreSQL code and thinking how bad this one part was :) But this is a fun post, and I hope it gets some donations.

Well, the sysadmin could click on "restore password" on that super-secret site they want to steal your password to, and then check your mailbox. So this is really no different in terms of security. Also, I'm sure I have a dozen restore pass

It could be done, and pretty easily too. To log in, you type in the e-mail. The server sends an email with a link (with secret code), which in turn sets a cookie when visited. The cookie expires in a month or so, and gets refreshed with eve

There's a reason CS courses don't teach the latest language. For one, the professors have other things to do than try every new language that comes out. Second, the concepts are the same. Most of the difference is the syntax sugar and the b

Never call me on the phone. The promise of that alone would make me want to switch banks. Calls for security reasons are fine. Seriously, the number of times my bank calls me is ridiculous. Usually it's to sell me extra stuff. Sometimes it'

Just do a quick calculation, and see how much you'll actually make. Then realize that your local McDonalds pays more. Also, ask yourself this: how do you know you'll get paid? You are helping someone run a scam. Which means they aren't exac

I guess it's true that there is some MS-bashing going on in the OSS community. But you have to admit, there is some irony in praising MS for open-sourcing a technology by saying it's the best thing for distributing closed-source binaries ;)

Mono won't kill Linux. It just doesn't really matter, that's all. There are equivalent (or better) tools available in the open-source world. The problem with this announcement (here I go with the problem :) is it doesn't really tell us whet

One problem is that voter turnout is generally low. And as far as I can tell, there is nothing in the system to stop a lot of fake ballots from being counted. And it's not possible to claim that a turnout of 75% is fraud, even if the usual

I wish Google would solve the drivers issue by doing something along these lines: Simply do not issue "works with Chrome OS" stickers/certification to hardware with closed drivers. After the device ships, most hardware manufacturers don't w

After I installed NoFlash in Firefox, I was surprised at how many sites have the Flash cookie thing. I never knew :) Personally, I don't really care about the tracking all that much. I'm extremely boring :) Which is why these cookies persis

This sounds like a pretty terrible culture you want to create. Why control what people do with your machines at all? (on separating email from development) It's a completely arbitrary rule that makes no sense. Hackers tend to question those

The point about too many choices is just not true. I have a few online stores I purchase from. And eBay. Sometimes Amazon, but me living in Canada means that it's mostly restricted to books. The average online store is so badly put together

I guess this is why most of us are just reading HN and are uncertain if we want to take the plunge :) This story is exactly the kind of worst-case scenario I'm afraid of.

If the Internet is to be cleaned up, then this is the way to go. You can't crack down on file sharing and turn a blind eye to these types of scammers. And the "wild west" days of the net are numbered, for better or worse.

This is exactly what most guys out there are conditioned to think. "I must be a provider". It's stupid. Yes, make sure your kids aren't starving. No, they don't need a new videogame every week. Kids aren't as dumb as adults think they are.
