Have you used VR much? Quest 3 FOV is much better. And FOV is kind of the holy grail for immersive VR and interactive experiences. So saying Vision Pro is strictly better (and at 7x the cost) makes little sense to me.

This iPhone trope has gotta die. I worked at Motorola when the iPhone came out. Every single engineer knew this thing would blow everything else out of the water. It was one of the largest leaps in consumer tech devices ever. I assure you t

Apples behaviour vis a vis the App Store is the textbook definition of monopolistic practices. It’s beyond the pale these stories. The only reason I can think it continues is because there are a lot of AAPL holders in Congress.

Rosetta/parallels can’t emulate the full x86 instruction set. You will run into problems. Like avx2, which is over 10 years old, won’t work. Best to stick with an x86 machine for x86 dev. One approach is to use a remote server. Sourc

You're not wrong. I seriously attempted to use Emacs for about 5 years (after using it throughout university decades ago), and I got it to about 95%, but got exhausted of it being so fiddly. You can also never get away from the inheren

I think the issue is LLMs don't scale well to the level needed for search. They also have obvious latency. So generative usage seems to be the best fit at the moment.

Yeah, I think I need to give it another chance at some point. There's just so many games and so little time. :) I'm having a blast with RoR Returns right now, and that requires 0 investment to get going.

I feel like there must be something odd about me, because I just could not get into it. Campy story/unfunny humour, slow paced/turn paced combat, confusing UX with a million options/choices, and unclear overall guidance of wh

Yeah, I wonder if it's optimized for US only right now. If the Kagi team is listening, please fix for world wide :). It's not always bad, but P95 needs work.

I really like Kagi. The only thing bugging me is there is occasional delays when searching, at least from the UK. Google's instant search definitely has spoiled me there.

Don’t candidates have to sign NDAs to not reveal problems? How do you get away with posting potential IP violation, especially system design questions. Genuinely curious on this - is it legally allowed?

Probably because it's sufficiently interesting for the nerds on HN. Random articles like this crop up from time to time! I upvoted.

I'm not discounting management or leadership. These are also very critical roles that can make or break organisations. But I'd challenge your assertion that management has a "way bigger impact" than a single IC can have.

It's possible, but harder than almost any other role. There are people at Google/Meta like this. Usually E7/E8 levels, "coding machines". It's much easier to go into a pseudo PM/TL/Director role thoug

Has anyone noticed Alexa / Hue being super buggy in the last week. Very delayed, complaining about hue devices offline, etc. Is it related?

I’m actually kind of shocked Valve is releasing a gen2 product. And so soon. I guess pigs can fly after all.

No offence but you live in an out of touch worldview. A majority of the world uses instagram/fb. Every single non techy adult I know uses instagram regularly to stay in touch with their social circle. Older generations use FB. Most peo

Not sure how you can say this with a straight face. I get spammed all the time on iMessage. Who cares if it is a blue or green bubble, it’s still spam.

I’ve had a life long struggle with nose breathing. It manifests itself with very dry mouth at night, waking me up frequently. At one point I went to a prolific ENT surgeon who wanted to align my septum and remove turbinoid tissue (I’m guess

The perpetual inner turmoil for talented engineers :). I accepted a while ago that there's more to life than coding and career, so I don't do much outside of work - 40-50 hours a week of engineering is enough for me. But I try to

I was always kind of puzzled that big tech companies seem to exclusively use Macs for software dev. Then when I joined one, I discovered that everyone uses remote Linux VMs for actual development. Which makes a lot more sense - Macbook as a

Lots of mmos have low tick rates. I believe Eve Online is once per second. Originally WoW was like 2.5/s. You don’t need high tick rates in MMOs (but you certainly have to design the game systems around expected server tick rate).

Been using Kagi now for a couple months and overall find it better than G. G also returned lots of rubbish depending on the query. At least in Kagi I can blacklist obvious SEO spam sites and never see them again.
