The notion of not having certain demographics in lucrative industries doesn't always hold true though. Women dominate the fields of pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and education. All fairly desirable jobs. Some paying better than softwar

I'm not ruling anything out. In fact it's been shown in studies that even at a few years old males prefer to play with traditionally masculine toys and girls the opposite. Does that extend to differences in career choice? Is it na

Any other perspectives on this? Racial and gender diversity is clearly lacking in tech and I have a feeling that's even more concentrated at the "top" employers. Not sure if we can do much about it though. Anyone that's

TLDR: Not meeting profitability targets. Starting to run out of money. Selling ads isn't making enough. Fired a bunch of people. VC's want us to get back to hyper growth, whatever that means. Hoping for the best.

I've had the opposite experience. Not universal, but I find most startups I've interviewed with extremely arrogant. The nicest workplaces for me have been the old and steady companies with boring software. Things I see a lot in st

It might be simpler than even that. Most cables are black because black ones are more durable for many reasons(UV resist and more choice of composition/processing) Apple likes their bright colors too much to do that :)

Hahaha I feel for your downvotes but cheers for saying something that probably needs to be said. PHP is the COBOL of web application development. It's built for an era of websites that's no longer relevant. As with perl, unless yo

Does anyone else think the timing is kinda funny? Today, at least in the US, is probably the slowest news day of the year. Great time to unload anything unfavorable :)

The US government also historically goes to great lengths to protect its citizens abroad. For the most part, a US citizen sucked into a civil war or other terrible situation can show up at the embassy and everything will be okay. Might not

Both ways of connecting the dots leads to the same conclusion. Crime has been increasing in large, poor cities. These people by vast margin are not legal gun owners, so I think it's a bit premature to connect gun sales to rising crime

I've been reading a lot into these recent DDoS attacks and countermeasures. Even though syn cookies are a hack they fix the biggest exploitable resource hole in TCP. It's now possible to initialize TCP using no stored state info b

Had the OSI network model won out eons ago we would have enough separation between layers to use custom protocols. For better or worse, that battle was long decided by TCP/IP and the two have been tightly intertwined ever since. It
