Not really -- I use plain HTML because otherwise the AJAX requests eats 50% of my CPU and a huge part of my memory. The HTML browser is just plain faster.

The choice seems to be, do you plan on building a leveragable product or not ( http://blog.pmarca.com/2007/06/the_truth_about.html ). If the answer is no, then you bootstrap, if the answer is yes, then leverage the hell out of it -- and so

Great post. Two questions: 1) So, presuming you were at startupschool, did you notice the people who were there tended to be more enthusiastic than is typical? If you did not attend, was it because you are just too busy and/or tired/grump

I volunteered for a local team of the US FIRST Robotics Competition ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIRST_Robotics_Competition ). I felt especially proud, as my team was all girls. My suggestion is go for quality rather than quantity, unles

Post on cragislist? Your project seems like a nice way for a young, up and coming, designer/hacker, to get his or her hands dirty. Good luck.

My opinion is only academic, but the conclusion I've formed from reading news.YC is exactly opposite of yours markbao. The VCs claim they fund people . So you have to ask why? The best developers know what features are necessary for 1.0,

Mean Salary at Goldman Sachs last year was $650K. Obviously, the distribution is non-gaussian, so the median salary is significantly lower. Meaning, you start working at GS for $100K/year, because, in a few years (if you're good) you'll gr

Interesting, but I have the impression that The Street likes to hire "PSDs." As an anecdote, check out this posting: http://www.schlaikjer.net/reviews/100.htm "I would also remark that many of these now very wealthy people were not born

Cool post. Should be titlted, "A New Path to Liqudity" because of the interesting "private liquidity markets" - I've never heard of one. And it seems these have not been discussed before on news.YC. (at least, GSTrUE, oaktree, or OPUS-5.

Learning electronics was much, much, harder for me than programming. Electronics seemed magical. I couldn't break complex circuits into the little components, circuits didn't seem to be built hierarchically. I felt like, if a circuit des

I think you answered your own question: "Isaac Asimov said that humanoid robots will have an advantage because the whole world is already build for humans." Given the choice, do you really think we would rebuild the whole world's infrastruc

It's truly amazing the quantity of information in the images you are looking at. Basically, we're trying to explain how galaxies form. The progress that's been made on the problem has been tremendous over the past 10 or 20 years, but we s

Assuming "calculating the bias" is a well posed question (and I'm not convinced it is) then measuring that bias is a noble goal for alexa engineers. Surely this is a multi-phd-thesis kind of problem though :)

Ok, I'm now being overly-pedantic :) I don't think alexa "scales up." If they do, then, you're right, there is uncertainty. If they don't, I don't think there's a concept of an error bar here. They track how many people go to what sites.

Though this probably sounds pedantic, it's not intended to be. How would one define an error-bar for alexa's report on octopart? Isn't the whole problem with alexa, in this case, that the cross-section alexa trackees, is not necessarily th

A lot of comments here have focused on implementation details. Let's ignore FPGAs, startup costs, etc... One huge advantage of hardware, is that you actually have something you can sell. As an interesting hardware startup archetype, con

How can one do relevant science without the support that comes from a research institution? Research professor (I clump lab researchers into the professor term) is certainly a new thing. So is "big money" science (a consequence of WWII.)

Of course it's hard. Harder than people who aren't trying can imagine. Chance of success is low. But there are a number of success stories. Perfect example: the search for extra solar planets. Twenty years ago, Geoff Marcy, a prof at a
