Can someone explain this to me? It nailed me, and i'm roaming far from home. I'm rusty on my phone tracking technology... they send the phone an SMS, is that the mechanism? (e.g., premium sms processing gatway has geo?) Or do they tap int

Wow, 4.4 0-60 is really fast for such a big car. Worth the extra $$ for the bigger battery to win a few drag races. The styling seems like a melange of Aston Martin, Jag, and Maserati -- too bad it's not something truly distinctive, but it

The mapping team at Nokia is by far the best software development team in the organization (maybe with the exception of Trolltech/qt), and it's surviving the MSFT integration. It's (largely) the legacy of the successful acquisition of Gate

I've been using this since june (not sure if it was a beta or what) and the men's selection is decent, but a little more limited and slightly downmarket from gilt. Not sure about the womens clothes. I've ordered three or four times from g

I wouldn't call it an either/or question -- tech media (for example) is going to hit a really specific band of end consumers. Is that the entire universe you want to go after? If so, great, but if you're looking to hit a really broad spec

General comment on display advertising -- it can be surprisingly effective for consumer brands in particular (b2b can be really tough). It sounds like Mixrank is talking about a specific technique (direct site buys), which can work great

Radioactive cars? What could possibly go wrong? Joking aside, it's a neat idea, but from the article it sounds like the kicker is this: "Stevens admits that his biggest hurdle isn’t the thorium and laser aspects of the system, but the mini

Very interesting. How many ad impressions do you generate during an hour of web browsing? 100? 500? That's $0.10 - $0.50 of revenue at a $1CPM.

Lastname + zip is more than accurate enough to drive a lot of value for advertisers. It doesn't take a lot of precision to improve advertising efficiency. Link a creditcard to your google account and you're marketer's wet dream.

Newsflash: "if you build it they will come" is bullshit. It's dawned on your that you're not getting your message out. Now what? 1. Buy ads. It costs about $0.00001 to show an ad banner on mobile. $0.01 to buy on a click basis. $10k to g

Always surprised to see how diabetes coverage in the popular press blurs the difference between Type I ("juvenile") and Type II ("adult onset").

Earth to techwriter... Google already has a full realtime exchange stack. They're buying publisher relationships.

Ugh. I went to college with Mike. An email exchange I had with him a few years ago about the 'health scare' sounded more like a 'break with reality'.

The quick onslaught of the "it couldn't possibly be a meltdown" message in the mainstream media and the "MIT professor says" emails/webpages, etc all smacked of a propaganda campaign to me. All the while the fuel rods were sitting in a pud

Companies who control enough net infrastructure or have visibility into enough sites can do a reasonably good job of tracking you without using cookies. One way is to fingerprint a browser. EFF has a nice demo of this using HTTP headers.

Holy mother of god, no change management, staging or testing servers? On a site that big? Appalling, if true. (Not that good technology and process would have made the product suck much less.)

That poetic justice cuts right to the heart of the do-not-track debate, too. Big players have an angle to weasel out of the proposed legislation -- if you can see enough packet traffic (think Akamai, Juniper, Google, Comcast), who gives a f

This kind of mapping does not require that you use your work email to sign up for the loyalty card. I've talked to a company who does the same thing for retail shopping. They're cagey about it, but it sounds like they'll map your work emai
