I certainly don't want to get into the "PHP is a fractal of bad design" vs "PHP is awesome because it runs on a very high percentage of websites, including Facebook" debate. (I have no dog in this race, and I have a

That's so interesting. I absolutely love Elixir, but I just never saw it as a replacement for Python. (Which I hold in high regards as well) Perhaps it's only my experience with both langs. Elixir I used for JSON API type things,

I love it! I managed to get one client to do a "drop in" Netware replacement using some wire compatible netware replacement (I can't even remember the name) Their machines still kept the Netware login and everything. Good old

Oh man, Netware in the era of Windows 2000!! I had a few of these hold outs. Many of my clients were on WinNT 3.5 with a Netware 3.1 server. Getting the windows admins to understand loading NLMs and using the different console tools was &qu

I'm pretty sure that is discouraged by the docs and the author. Just because a library doesn't pop up a bouncing anthropomorphic paperclip and specifically ASK you, "are you sure you want to store this state globally?",

The comments are a bit disconcerting. "Redux is trash"? It's a finite state machine. At its simplest level that's all it is. Now, I get that requiring it in every single React app makes little sense, but the library itse

Yeah, for me, it's "just right". Most detractors claim it's "bleeding edge". What? just because it's got something newer than Postgres 9.1 available?? (this was my argument against Debian/Ubuntu for a

What is jQuery though? From the author's standpoint, it was a library built to smooth out the edges of bad browser support. This is a problem that doesn't exist as much these days. If you're looking for a way to select one or

Folks think I'm crazy for using Arch as my main dev machine. I'm not an Ubuntu hater at all (it runs my main server in the basement at home)... but it'd be awfully hard to go back to using it as my main machine.

Thanks! Yeah, Just running Slack and Chrome (not to mention Spotify sometimes) can send my resource usage fairly high. I went back to Vim (from a couple of Electron-based editors running in vim-emulation mode). I used i3 a bit for about a y

Awesome, thanks. My BIOS upgrades are such a mess. I get notified that I have them.... but they always fail. I haven't dug into the logs to see why. This is honestly the most lazy I've ever been with a Linux install in 20 years, m

Fantastic. Thanks for the info. I've installed tlp, but I never really looked too deeply into it (yet). Most days at the office I'm plugged in - and that can be a problem too with the battery constantly receiving a charge.

I'd love to hear more about the tweaks you've done to Arch. I've gone little beyond a few power management things myself (On a Thinkpad X1C Gen 6). I get decent battery life, but I know it could be better. And giving up Arch

K3s is fantastic. Lately I've been using K3d (which is the same thing, just in a docker container - much like Kind) It's super easy to spin up a cluster, and spin it back down with nothing really to clean up.

Having worked in both DevOps (or Ops as we called it in 2002), there really was a belief that the developers were stupid, and they'd burn the whole place down if we gave them any leeway. As a developer, I've seen DevOps as a frust

I love React, but when I saw Tom Dale demo GlimmerVM, I thought to myself, now HERE is something truly new and exciting(in that context - there's nothing new about bytecode). I watch the progress with great enthusiasm.

I see. I would NEVER encourage someone to exercise from some ivory tower. It's hard. I get it. Given the choice, I'd rather hang out on my couch. I've also had a heck of a health scare this year, so I advocate quite heavily:

I'm a big fan of SDKMan for handling my Java/Kotlin/Gradle releases. It works across all the major platforms. Homebrew is great on macOS, but kinda non-existent on other platforms.

I too have been down this road. I tried Atom for a couple of months, and that turned into a couple of years. I had it tuned into a VERY NICE Vim. I tried out VSCodeVim and got it to be a mostly passable Vim. It sure is pretty though. I'
