Didn’t I read recently that Polya attributed Russia’s better performance in high school maths (vs the USA) to its preference for word problems?

OP said the fringes of China are basically third world ghettos, and having seen it first hand, he/she is not far off. International/military supremacy is a completely different story though.

While I would support regulation to stop stupid people from losing their money, I also have zero sympathy for anyone who loses their money on something like doge. Anyone who buys into a get-rich-quick scheme is a greedy fool, rich or poor.

In 2015 or so, I was really surprised to hear that the Australian Stock Exchange was going full-steam ahead with a blockchain-based settlement platform. From memory, they were targeting 2020 or so for a full rollout. Just checked and this h

patchelf is a lifesaver for handling Android/iOS with libraries compiled outside the regular toolchain (both platforms can be very finicky about soname/rpath). On one occasion, however, I did spend days chasing a crash that turned

The fact that you think a net worth of a quarter of a million dollars at 25 is unremarkable goes to show how completely out of touch you are.

I have no clue why an organizer would try and edit (censor?) a speaker's presentation. They were invited for a reason, let them talk! The audience is perfectly capable of coming up with their own conclusion about whether the speaker&#x

I had to unfollow him for precisely this reason. It’s just a relentless torrent of negativity. Maybe his feed isn’t a great indication, but he seems like a very unhappy person.

Except startups usually has a couple of people with nothing to fall back on, who will fight tooth and nail to try and succeed. Your average Google VP is far too comfortable - and with nowhere near enough humility - to stoop to that level.

I agree, I think it's totally insane that we are allowing this to happen (and I'm most the liberal/free-market person I know). Google is literally one of the most profitable companies in the world. It could easily implement a

That's not a contractual mistake though, is it? It was an auction, meaning anyone could bid, and he put a genuine bid for $200k. Just because the system crashed doesn't mean anyone actually made a representation they didn't i

As of 2 years ago (pre-COVID), no. You needed a passport, and that's it. I doubt things have changed materially since then. Some people require permission to leave (e.g. certain party members/SOE managers/etc), and I'm s

Americans of Chinese descent are not Chinese. My wife is Beijing born-and-bred and refers to (East) Asians as yellow people, as do many of her friends. If you want a more objective source and can read Chinese, there's a Baidu Baike (th

I struggle to have any sympathy for "the little guy". Noone's lying to them, noone's defrauding them, noone's stealing anything or embezzling from them. It's just greed, plain and simple. If you pile into a get
