I doubt this would work (at least with the current version of GPT4). I tried the same thing last week (Swift to Kotlin) and there were so many errors the whole exercise was pointless. Claude fared better, but I wouldn’t bother doing it agai

The best counterargument to “GPT4 is going to replace us all” is actually using it for a couple of weeks. It has a few neat tricks but it’s not reliable and at least half of what it generates is totally unusable, the other half requires hea

I don't agree with the decision to switch. At that point, given the sunk cost, I probably would have continued with the original plan. However, that doesn't change the fact that the original plan was bad and should never have been

Not to mention that the NBN was already over budget and years behind schedule by the time the Liberals decided to switch to MTM. The whole thing was a disaster from the beginning.

If there’s one thing that infuriates me about the current crop of phones, it’s this. I’ve actually mostly switched to voice dictation because my iPhone touch screen sucks so much. Bring back physical keyboards!

I’ve had exactly the same experience, it’s infuriating and I suspect it’s to ease the server load for inferencing. I don’t know how the author hasn’t encountered this.

In this case, you can train it yourself. That’s why I think it’s a fair comparison.

The code is open source (Mozilla Public Licence), it's only the licence for the model weights which prohibits commercial use. I don't think the concept of open source translates very well to model weights. The "source" i

This looks really interesting, thanks for linking. Is this a Google project? It wasn't immediately clear.

I don't think you can fairly accuse independent game developers (who are overwhelmingly building atop Unity) of nickel and diming customers. Most of them never even break even.

Yes it was. I've kept it in case there is some way to fix/restore it in future, but since I had all the important photos/videos on iCloud, I don't really have a pressing need.

FWIW I tried to restore my iPhone backup from my Mac last week, and it totally failed. If I hadn't had iCloud, I'd be SOL. (This is not a defence of Apple btw - it's unforgivable that they lock down the phone so you can only

Singapore has them too. Never eaten from them so I don’t know what the food quality is like, but they’re never busted or filthy like you’d see in Australia. You can have a lot of nice things when you have a government (and a society) commit

IMDb reviews are reliable…as long as you wait a few months after something is released. Pre-release/release reviews are clearly manipulated.

This isn’t really true (or at least, doesn’t apply across the board). Qwen (Alibaba’s open source model) outperforms GPT4 on Chinese language tasks, and I can further finetune it for my own tasks (which I’ve done, and I confirm it’s produce

Lightweight? Are we talking about the same piece of software? That hasn't been my experience at all, it's the most sluggish launcher I've ever dealt with.

Lyra is a real-time neural speech codec from Google - I don't know if they use it in the Pixel line for call compression, but they certainly could. Interestingly, I had the idea of using their open-source version as a vocoder for a lig

I saw that interview, Altman said (paraphrasing) "you won't be able to compete, there's no point trying". I didn't interpret it as directed at the example the questioner gave (a few engineers with a few million doll

I'm fairly certain that Toptal's "long selection process" is designed to weed out anyone who has other options, because they're harder to bully into putting their rates down. That turned me off, but at the same time

I live in Singapore and haven't found this at all. My only real complaints are (a) it's hot, and (b) it's a small, dense, urban environment with too many cars, it often feels quite suffocating. There is a third issue (freedom

Monopoly is a stretch. Half of the models I try come direct from GitHub (and almost 100% of all model code comes from GH too). Hosting binaries isn't really a stable business model.

When I looked at it, Toptal required a four week unpaid project as part of their "vetting" procedures. I'm still not sure who is actually willing to put themselves through that.

I was a bit annoyed when I bought Quake II on Steam a few months back and found it didn't come with the soundtrack. I just grabbed it from archive.org and dumped the files in the right folder, worked fine.

Lyra is a speech-only codec, so it's apples and oranges to compare with Opus for general-purpose audio compression.
