This is excellent! And also - I think that building HN utilities / clients is like the modern nerd FizzBuzz (in a good way). Is it strictly necessary? No, but it’s a great intellectual exercise, it’s something many of us have thought

A thought exercise you should undertake if you're thinking about / talking about crypto/NFT/web3-related projects: If the financial instrument that underlies the project were to stop going up in value XX% per month, wou

Exactly. Much like the fact that everyone complains about Basic Economy airfares ("they're nickel-and-dime'ing you for carry-on!!!") the reality is that in the face of competition, people still just choose the lowest ai

I spent ~10 years in the rental car business (although the very very high end of it.) Let me say, it's a weird business with LOTS of quirks. Here's one: One of the biggest frustrations people have is that it seems impossible to

This is awesome. Great idea, great execution, and great story. You scratched your own itch and turned it into a business. Thanks for sharing the project and background.

For me at least, the answer is that my side projects are about more than money (though they are about money too!). Developing things myself is the primary goal - it’s deeply satisfying to build your own project from the bottom up without h

Yup agreed 100%. I see this often as a suggestion for testing your project hypothesis and I think it’s a terrible idea. Starting your relationship with a customer by misrepresenting your state of development is bad advice.

I'm going to disagree with the sibling responses here and agree with your premise - I actually think in some cases it's not fair to calculate APR for short term, low value loans. Here's why: There's a transaction cost w

Read up on LinkedIn vs. HiQ. As long as that ruling holds (and it might not), the tl;dr is: If it's on the open web, you can scrape it. You might be violating some Terms of Service (that you never agreed to), but you're not vio

1000% this. "Metaverse" is just fancy re-branding of "Facebook but with VR". They want you to buy an Oculus and go to their internet property when and if people start interacting with the internet via VR, just like you

As other have commented, this is absolutely mind-bogglingly hard core. Kudos to the NSO group engineers who designed and built this (regardless of your allegiances and whether you like or dislike that they do this and whether it's obj

Among coin collectors, we call the process “toning” instead of tarnishing (a much more benign word, IMHO ;) It’s the exact same chemical process, most commonly seen in old silver dollars that were stored in sulpher-containing mint/bank

The problem with waiting 1-2 seconds between requests is that if you’re trying to scrape on the scale of millions of pages, the difference between 30 parallel requests / sec and a single request every 1-2 seconds is the difference betw

I presume you’ve read The Egg. I work with some folks who, like me, love it and we have adopted an “Eggist” mindset. Do unto others as you would (and will!) do unto your future self ;)

I had a similarly weird thing happen to me with an even weirder outcome: I was in the Dominican Republic last year and I got a notification that someone had sent me $100 via CashApp. It wasn't a person I recognized, she looked clearly

To build on this: Why does being remembered matter at all? It doesn't. It's a weird trait in the human brain to want to be remembered. The instant you die you will have no memory of yourself, your life, or anything really :) So
