Being angry at work is very common, but that doesn't make it healthy. Take it as a sign to look for another job, doing something you can take joy in.

Yes, you are in the wrong major. If you're looking to be involved in the business aspect of a technology company, a computer science degree will not be very useful. I have a BS in computer science, and in my experience, the curriculum was o

I would argue Google had identified the profitable business model, but needed VC money in order to implement it effectively. Their minimum viable product (their search technology) was already developed at that point. I agree that MVP and le

The author is completely missing the point of lean and minimal viable product. His assertion that Google would only be a "small search player" if they'd gone the lean startup route is way off, because Google already had their MVP built by t

We're a product company, so it's a slightly different stance. However, we made a conscious decision early on not to support IE6 for the following reasons: 1. Our app is very interactive, and we didn't want to have to deal with incompatibili

It's just a rule of thumb, like the "rule of 7" when it comes to cognitive load. The point is to continue past the surface issue until you find the real problem. Fixing a lower-level problem (like not having automated testing) has much more

This is a fantastic article. We've had a decent amount of success so far with our startup following this same mantra. Release early with a core set of features, and then follow up with rapid releases (preferably one per feature). This has t

Yeah, it's tough to find a balance with freemium pricing. The restrictive free account is one of the reasons we introduced the 30-day money-back guarantee. It's actually baked into the software, so if you cancel your account (or downgrade t

Yeah, I'm on the fence about the tour start page, with the four summaries ( http://agilezen.com/tour ). I might just ditch it and funnel users directly into the first step of the tour. The summaries don't add enough to risk bouncing people

Re: call-to-action, it's between the signup button and the video tour. I might try to make the video tour link stand out a bit more, though. The product itself is (intentionally) sparse and understated. This leads to (we think) a great user

Good idea. Captions would help. I might also see if there's a way I can direct users to the associated part of the video tour from the screenshots.

Good point. I typically don't believe in the fold, but we are using up a lot of content area for the "splash" artifacts.

Thanks. I might try to funnel visitors towards the video tour more, since that's where the product is really showcased. The screenshots are just meant to grab your attention. :)

When we originally launched our public-facing website for Zen in May, the product was still under heavy development, and we had very few screenshots. Now that the product has stabilized, we've redesigned our marketing site to try to showcas

I think this rings true, not only for women, but all software developers. I think too many people in software become too focused on arguing the best way of doing things that they never actually accomplish anything of real value.

This strikes me as an idea that is useful and interesting as a sociological theory, but in practice it's pretty pointless. Imagine the terrible press that the RIAA would get if they announced that they would start suing based on such ridicu

This is a weak article about a pretty slick tool. (They aren't really Linux apps, they're Mono apps, but since Mono is cross-platform, they may be running on a Linux machine.)

The majority of the arguments are just FUD. They might have applied in 2001, but to write this post now is just silly. He complains about breaking changes between 1.1 and 2.0 -- 2.0 came out in 2005. My guess is that he's really just angry

I agree entirely. I rarely do more than skim the comments anymore, because too often it just turns into a contest for one-upsmanship and ego stroking. There are people on here that will take any opportunity to argue about any topic.

Sometimes growth is the problem. I've worked for companies who were great when they were small, eager companies with solid products, and screwed everything up trying to "go big".
