Finding astronvim through this comment and it looks like it may be time to move on from my regular vim to nvim. I like keeping things light so I'll probably just steal some plugins used there but the functionality looks like things I a

I agree. Give companies struggle to evaluate engineers during their employment over a period of months (if not years), I'm not surprised an interview doesn't tell you much about an engineer either.

I don't think the dichotomy you're presenting is fair? You can have bad kids, teachers, etc. bully your kid at school. For the most part, you're not going to get bullied in most office jobs (though I do not want to downplay i

I misread and didn't realize the schedule changed from the offers I received 2+ years ago. This compensation structure is definitely my preference.

Oh, I COMPLETELY misread due to my biases. My fault. You are completely right. Perhaps I'm not as good as a negotiator as I thought (or the schedules are within the past two years) b/c I haven't ever received an offer that ba

It depends how old you are, how senior you are, and how likely you are to switch companies in a shitty situation. It works for a specific (perhaps more stable) archetype of engineering hire for sure!

> 1. The management has so completely screwed up that they don't deserve a job. Yes and no? It feels a bit silly to look at things from a results perspective instead of a process one. Management everywhere was spending money to grow

You're probably not good at interviewing. That's pretty normal especially if you don't job hop frequently. The good part is you're not being resume screened. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Worst case scena

I 100% agree. I know pessimism stops me from taking risks (and likely rewards), so I'd never subject others to that pessimism and try to be outwardly supportive/optimistic towards their goals. That being said, I find that many wor

Can you speak as to how you would develop the skill to identify companies that end up having success but _also_ compensate their employees well? Also, if you're actually good at that skill, aren't you incentivized to just be an in

The best way is finding a community and/or individuals you trust and getting their opinion. By community, I mean something much smaller than "HackerNews" or a subreddit.

The tone of your comment reads as if you're disagreeing with my comment but you're in fact agreeing? I'm a bit confused. :) A slight disagreement FWIW, > Frankly this is the key failure point of many suggestions for how t

1. People in unions are fired all the time with cause. 2. Terrible engineers exist with tenure/some other reason that they are not fired. Tech is not unionized right now and there are plenty of horror stories...

It's because people are trained to think in terms of individual actors instead of systems. They're also trained to think their country's system is great if not for the X, Y, Z people ruining it. Of course, those who are educa

Wow. It sounds like you'd benefit from society where the risk of innovating (assuming your business is innovating in some capacity) is not life or death! I daresay a more equitable society would make it so you have an easier time with
