Actually a few people were experimenting with the idea before the Google guys did it. They just did it better. In the plex talks about that in the first couple chapters.

I don't think many people want videophones. That would mean having to wear pants and t-shirts all day and combing your hair. That's to me why it never became reality. So in effect people didn't know they wanted SMS but when they got it they

Not exactly, it might be deterministic but that doesn't mean you can predict what will happen without running it. Same as understanding the forces of a hurricane doesn't let us make very good prediction on it's path without using huge amoun

What is sad about this is a lot of things that were created in the early 1900s will now be lost forever since copies cannot be made and archiving the works on a different medium would infringe copyright. Trying to get the rights for those t

bah, not really if you use editors like emacs or vim. I'd suggest also using screen to maintain a dev session going. screen lets you start shells and detach from a session without closing any of them (useful for long running jobs too). In t

Yeah I had a reaction like this in the past, but I got to meet the people who worked on a similar project as mine and they did their thing completely independently. I can't say the same of another group who took my css files for their site.

Yeah, that caught my eye too. I was waiting to see if there was any engineering or science degrees in the group they selected but nope. All BAs.

I wonder why it's so expensive to run the thing? I mean, it should be pretty cheap to deliver small applications like that. Maybe the labor to check all the new apps?

Well... if the records are released I don't think they should change. Someone record at 50 isn't the same as at 60. Unless these are live datasets.

I have cable internet in Quebec and the cap is really low. 120gb a month is to me quite low. I watch most of my tv,news, sports online now and I have to actively monitor it. Does nothing to reduce my total bw rate usage while I'm streaming.

That's what I admire about John Carmack. He wants people to hack his games and do stuff with them. He pushes to release old engines as GPL (soon the Doom 3 engine will be released, offering some real game code to study for people wanting to

It's interesting that the president has the ability to waive ITC imporation bans. But the author calling the patents Apple is using to sue "Inventions" is a little bit far fetched.

I have no fear for apple's survival at least in the near 5+ years. Things will change but the talent that builds the products is still there. The coders, the designers ... all that needs to happen is for the culture created by Jobs to stick
