I don't think many people want videophones. That would mean having to wear pants and t-shirts all day and combing your hair. That's to me why it never became reality. So in effect people didn't know they wanted SMS but when they got it they loved it. People claimed they wanted Videophones but when they understood the drawbacks they balked.
