I can only speak for myself, but I did recycle whatever I could from the leftover materials when I was subscribed. My apartment complex made it very easy to do so. Either way, needing to recycle is not unique to Blue Apron at all. You can e

I agree, but the same applies to a lot of materials accumulated from grocery store shopping. Like I said, I do think Blue Apron ends up being more wasteful in the end, but it doesn't strike me as an "astounding" difference.

I don't remember receiving any dry ice or styrofoam. The ice pack is recyclable. You just have to let it melt and empty out the water. There's a foil liner which is also recyclable. If there's no recycling option near you, yo

I've subscribed to Blue Apron before and, regarding waste, it doesn't seem much different from going to the grocery store. Meat ingredients like chicken breast, salmon, and beef are individually wrapped exactly like they are in th

I've ended up using "big data" tools like Spark for only 32GB of (compressed) data before, because those 32GB represented 250 million records that I needed to use to train 50+ different machine learning models in parallel. Fo

I think there's a middle tier of problems that don't need a distributed cluster but can still benefit from parallelism across, say, 30-40 cores, which you can easily get on a single node. Once you know how to use Spark, I haven&#x

Spark is a fairly generic data processing engine with excellent SQL support, and its DataFrame structure is pretty similar to a pandas DataFrame. It can be really useful even on a single node with a bunch of cores. Spark's MLLib also h

I don't think I follow here. The goal of training the network isn't to encode the training data in the model, but rather to build a model that generalizes well. If the neural network has just memorized the training examples, the

This might be a dumb question, but let's say that for whatever reason on a specific problem it's much easier to train a neural network that generalizes well than a decision tree. Why not train the network, then build an equivalent

My understanding is that the anxiety isn't about a fear of programming being automated in the near future, but rather about ML growing into a required, essential skill for a software developer in the next few years.

I don't think it's a waste of time. Even if you can't straight-up get a pure data science job, you can still benefit from having this background: (1) You could focus on building data processing platforms using, e.g., Spark. T
