Anyone try running this on iOS? Does the CS backend always definitely need writable executable memory access (not available on iOS) or can it interpret a bytecode?

Yeah I'm looking forward to seeing how concepts work out in practice. Also, to clarify on the original point, in this case it doesn't require that much template trickery. Most attributes could be handled as `.foo(Foos::BAR_1)` to

I'm fine with that rn cuz the use case is a personal API for me making game tooling UI on a side project, still kind of experimental. It's basically what the JS that gets generated from React JSX is like, and also like immediate m

I haven't used GCC in a while, but clang's template error msgs are way better than MSVC's in my experience. Still not like--good--haha. Like not Elm-level.

Yeah it's not great unfortunately. It ends up being that I have two sides of this code--one side is this subset that I've wondered about writing analysers for and checking the syntax just for this custom "dialect" almost

With 'modern C++' you can make APIs way nicer than the Java-like API going on here. Lambdas really help, along with RAII which has already been around. I have an API going where the following syntax creates a div with a 'tool

Re: the first paragraph--a lot of "formal CS education" focuses on systems and there are systems tracks. Where BSD came from, for example. So I wouldn't call it useless (while the parts that do not focus on systems do, indeed

Another consideration here is that you can use languages that offer control over data layout as a natural feature, which can matter a lot for good cache utilization etc. In many cases the data layout matters a lot for performance. You can d

The manual memory management thing -- like needing GC -- feels like a false dichotomy. Most of these languages that have GC need you to "manually" manage resource lifetimes anyways for a lot of resources: files, network connection

It seems like the main benefit the authors of hooks get at is being able to encapsulate a library's logic into hooks that you can reuse, so eg. you could do `const [data, loading] = useQuery('some query');` and the query is a

I agree for all the 'appliance' stuff; and a lot of times that's what you want. But I think also we should be sure to enable and flood computers with "play" spaces--which are about such 'tinkering' but I t

Assuming at least two of the components are "idea" and "execution," if you start with a definitely super bad idea, you'd get an execution-independent (bad) outcome.

Yeah this definitely makes sense. I think the startup work you do should build your personal portfolio. Open source (like with an actual open source license like MIT and no weird edge cases) work helps a ton too. I think also being paid in

Thanks! There are ways to work on ideas without sacrificing one's own life. And this can involve working in a small group that people will call a startup. There is no reason to enter into abusive relationships or sacrifice being paid,

There are a lot of envs that are not abusive. Having your workplace generalized and called abusive on the internet when it's not in real life, definitely feels abusive, however. I've seen people join abusive personal relationships

Yeah I believe in this game / simulated world NPC idea too. To get the kind of complexity we want we either need sensors in the real world or interfacing in a virtual world that humans bring complexity to (probably both -- the humans a

I think the line integral of curvature (changes sign based on concave / convexness) along perimeters remains the same under cutting / pasting; and it's different for squares and circles, so doesn't work out.
