Solving the problems is like doing a kata in martial arts: It’s not the result, it’s the steps you take that change your mind. That’s what I told students, when I taught physics for several years during my PhD. Even back then you could look

I remember reading that, in middlelow German the meanings were swapped “See” meaning the ocean and “Meer” meaning large body of standing water. That’s probably why the lake is called “Steinhuder Meer”. In low German the word for ocean still

In science and math, too often only the final result gets credited or published. Maybe we should start crediting and publishing our intermediate results and attempts. Humans would gain credit for providing a part of the solution to tough pr

Good. There is no security by obscurity anymore. The only way to fight those who can just spend more tokens is to have more humans look at it, who also spend tokens.

This went much further: The GDR imported workers from Vietnam and even now there are sizeable Vietnamese communities e.g. in Leipzig. I interviewed a few old men who fought in the Vietnam war as child soldier, for a school project I did as

The proof OpenAi presented allegedly reads like written by someone in acid. It will take probably a while before we will get a translation into something that than will actually have a positive impact. That could be either a second proof or

If you eat enough kiwis with skin, tarantula abdomens start to look like something tasty. I read that online, I trained myself to eat whole Kiwis and lo and behold: It is true! Our brains are so wonderfully strange!

I think the emotional investment of people into your work is the actual bulwark. Star Trek turned 60, and most of the newer stuff was mediocre at best, still it persists, because people made it a part of their identity. Star Wars, Doctor Wh

That is much more relevant than one would think: The biggest problem for adoption of digital payment in everyday lives is, that for token payments the transaction fees are to high. In case of 0.5€ for using a toilet the fixed transaction co

My understanding is, that we do not know if the chain-of-thought actually matters in the way we assume for the result. I think there were experiments where seemingly relevant parts of the CoT were ablated and it did not change the result. F

That is why less capable clones of US services get so much attention at the moment. Every time these end up on HN, someone says something along the lines of: ”I would not host in a country without 1st amendment rights.”

You cannot steal what is not owned. At least in the EU there is no copyright for LLM outputs, so I guess all they might do is violate the terms of service.
