Can anyone explain what the uses are for this ? The limitations appear to be: * Cannot be published as a channel. Public channels are still Brightscript-only so there is no code re-use. * Requires a Linux workstation to build * Cannot deplo

Haxe does. Not that Haxe is mainstream, but it does target mainstream languages.

If you want to use OCaml-like GADTs and pattern matching in Python then there is the Haxe -> Python route. The Haxe compiler is actually written in OCaml and its type system is influenced by it.

"Chuckie Egg" was my introduction to hacking. I wrote an assembler program to load the game from tape, disassemble the code and overwrite the instruction that decremented the life count. The inline assembler in BBC Basic was an in

Totally agree on the macro front ! I use them to do compile-time code gen from Omnigraffle and iThoughts files. Definitely a super power but probably one that only works if you're the sole developer. Macro magic in a team environment i

OK - apparently iOS 14.2 does allow JIT for side-loaded apps (not App Store) via the CS_EXECSEG_ALLOW_UNSIGNED flag. Maybe this will be allowed for store apps in some future version. Fingers crossed! All previous versions of iOS do not perm

Does this allow AOT compiling of Racket code to native ARM or is everything interpreted ? Assuming that JIT is still not possible on iOS.

Only if code is downloaded/side-loaded after the app is installed. Racket code bundled with the app will be fine. The gray area is if the app allows the user to create new Racket code.

Sign-in-with-Apple might be acceptable here, allowing the user to opt for an app-specific anonymous email. But the lack of explanation is baffling.

This [0] is an equivalent/tracking project. I would be very interested if it gains iOS support. [0] https://github.com/pvieito/PythonKit

As long as there is no downloading, side-loading or user editing of python code in the app then Apple doesn't care. There are limited exceptions for apps that teach programming, such as Pythonista.

I've used Racket for many prototype languages and tools and love its facilities and philosophy. The thing that always gives me pause when considering it for a new project is that it has no robust mobile or client-side web story. If the

JavaScriptCore and JS running in a web page using WKWebView are both running in the same app process and do not support WASM since they cannot generate code (cannot write to executable memory pages). SFSafariViewController does support WASM

Python runs on iOS, Racket does not. The need for a JIT to make Racket performant also makes it unlikely that it ever will.

Unfortunately WASM on iOS could only be interpreted, not JITed, due to protected memory. Also WASM works in Mobile Safari and SFSafariViewController, but not in WKWebView - which limits its interaction with an app.
