I am pretty sure I'm living in an apartment that's smaller than my parent's house was when I was born in 1988, despite having three incomes instead of two to spend on it. I also think that a pretty big fraction of all the ext

I was a mechanical engineer for five years, now in software: The way programmers tend to default "engineer" to meaning "software engineer" bothers me sometimes too. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised by a m

it is a lot like an HMAC. The advantage of something like SipHash is just that it's faster for the same security, not that it's fundamentally different from HMAC.

I think you are making false assumptions about the way other people's brains work. We can't all remember to do things later, no matter how badly we want to. Would you say the same thing about someone who kept a small notepad in t

It turns out that it is, in fact, at least mostly possible to implement a condition type system in Clojure. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp0OEDcAro0 I did a little bit of googling for Clojure libraries that do this:

I've recently started carrying earplugs on my keychain for basically this reason, everything just sounds much better. The only tricky thing is remembering to speak loudly enough so that everyone else can hear me.

do you know anything about the wire temperature in these things? I looked at both links and didn't see any numbers outside the paywall. Another comment mentions a vapor temperature of <260C, but nothing about the wire temperatures

For whatever little it's worth, and appologies if you knew this already: Kanthal wire should be generally more 'inert' than stainless at high temperatures. The aluminum in Kanthal forms a tougher and more temperature resist

How is the crash rate? I used to use Inventor professionally, and that had a MTBF of perhaps 4 hours. I haven't needed a CAD program since then, but one of the things that'd make me try Solvespace first is that whitequark appears

I don't work on Solvespace and therefore don't know for sure, but I suspect they're not linear. In particular, a significant fraction of all constraints in a CAD system like that are of the form "the distance between th

I think this actually has the opposite implication from the one you seem to be trying to draw. If different teams finding the same bugs was common, then someone else probably would have found this one sometime in the last 14 years and repo

Common Lisp variables are not even a little bit immutable by default. setf is the opposite of immutable values, you can mutate any place in a way that's visible everywhere regardless of any sort of scoping. Immutable by default might

Why is OFB worse than CTR? Admittedly I'm just glancing at the wikipedia block cipher modes of operation page, but it is totally non-obvious to me that OFB with SHA1(msg) as an IV is worse than CTR with SHA1(msg) as the 'nonce&#x

I don't have an opinion on this particular compiler, or really any other similar one, but: Can't one make the same argument about a compiler from C++ to x86 machine code? C++ and x86 certainly don't have anything like a 1:1

I want typing "load foo.cg" and hitting enter in the debugger to print _something_, almost anything. Ideally it would print different things depending on whether foo.cg actually exists and is a valid file to try to load or not.
