I got excited too soon, seems very limited. I thought that they would at least start with Android seeing as that's where most users would be. Imagine as a developer spending 20 hours building Actions only for there to be no audience.

I was looking at the page earlier today, wondering when it's being launched. Great timing as my days at work are over for the rest of the year. I'm working on a public-transport chatbot in South Africa, planning on making it avail

I could access it from US VPN, so I don't know what the real trouble is. I can't think of anything in my country that would prevent Google from offering this service. From a billing perspective, Google already makes some money fr

Tried using it yesterday, but says it's not available in my country (South Africa). I'm tired of silly restrictions like this, it immediately turned me off Data Studio. I have a Tableau licence at work, which we feel are expensive

This looks cool! The GRPC support's what caught my attention, especially as I've found trying to pass GeoJSON objects around GRPC to be a pain. One of the irritating things with Protobufs is the lack of support for nested JSON-sty

I thought you would have reported the issue before/at the same time as the blog post. My opinion's that it sometimes works out better if I get in touch with software developers first, in case there is a known issue and/or wor

It eventually becomes a reputation and perception problem. For example, I've been happily using MongoDB for years now. The problems I've had with it are either: 1. Problems that I can solve by doing enough research up-front (how t

Interesting read, although other users have pointed out that some of the problems are solvable. I started using Firebase in May after the integration with Google Play. I run a public transit app/website (movinggauteng.co.za), and I hav

I suppose this is off topic, but I checked one of my email addresses on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and found a LinkedIn hack from May 2016. Thing is I've deleted my LinkedIn account thrice in 2013. They have no right

I'm fairly new to date manipulation in Java, between LocalDateTime, Instants, TemporalAdjusters etc. I get confused, but I'll catch up. The comment I replied to mentions Moment for JavaScript, which I would add to your list. It&#x

To go on a tangent, Java8 dates are "awesome" if you've used Joda-Time before, for the rest of us it's a pain in the backside. I found myself spewing lots of code to just do Moment one-liners. That made me appreciate Mo

I think most if not all Mainframes run Java, so I think saner would be to learn so I can port to Java. There are still younger guys in our banks who COBOL, but the domain expertise sits with the much older guys. It's lately common for

Interesting article! I've sometimes wondered if I should learn more COBOL. I'm 26, one of my gigs was to reverse-engineer loads of COBOL code whose functionality was being migrated to something modern. There was a few of these ver

Banks already do some of that locally and internationally. In South Africa we have BankServ, which is a local interchange and clearing house. Transactions are still in batches, but the settlement between banks happens nett between the local

Not sarcasm, I'm thinking MS purchases the company knowing what its issues (or perceived) are. I see MS as the lesser of 2 evils, a company I can generally trust with my data. The 'Dark Patterns' that LNKD employs would hurt

I hope this will usher in an era of less unethical behaviour from the company under new leadership. Congratulations to shareholders. Anyone know why they'd negotiate an all cash settlement?

Fair enough, but what happens if I open a page, send an Ajax call to say "add 1 user", then promptly close that page? I don't know what OP is doing to detect that a user is no longer on the site. The reasons why I used WebSoc

I commented separately, I use sockets for this. I don't know about libraries for PHP as I haven't used it in a while, but most socket libraries make it easy to implement something. My implementation is in-memory, and the nice thin

Why not just use websockets? I use socket.io on my site. I keep track of socket IDs in memory, if a connection is lost, I get a disconnect event, and vice versa. Socket events are sent to users when the number changes. I manage the frequenc
