Instead of focusing so much on standardized testing, we need to start valuing creativity, ingenuity and communication. Just because a school can increase test scores year-over-year, does not mean that the graduating students will make the

After reading up on the powerful SPL classes included with PHP5 and developing on top of the very well-coded KohanaPHP framework, PHP development has become very productive lately. Although, I prefer Python's syntax, the deployment speed o

Did they specify the dot pitch on the 27" screen? I recall testing the 17" MBP @ 1920X1200, but the text felt a bit small. Considering the old 24" was only 1920 pixels wide, packing 2560 pixels across into 27" seems tight.

MVC web development without ORM is definitely not fun. Being able to stay within the object paradigm when working with data keeps development momentum flowing. Stopping to write basic data access methods was always very annoying. I think

Having tested some clean installs of Windows 7, it really is a very smooth process (much improved over XP) -- at least for the somewhat technical user. I have not tested upgrading from XP to Windows 7, but it's probably not a good idea. Re

The 2.4 version that is due to be released shortly is an updated version of the 2.3 branch which is stable. The 3.x is a complete rewrite is likely to be less stable. I haven't used 3.x for a project yet, but it does look interesting. Her

The comparison between the frameworks was more relevant at the initial fork, when Kohana was simply a PHP5 port of CI with a additional functionality. However, at this point in time, the code bases have diverged to the point where no more

As a long time Kohana user, it really does make working with PHP much cleaner and faster. It takes the best architectural aspects of CI and adds some excellent functionality (full OOP, ORM, cascading filesystem, Events, Auth module). The K

This is a significant development and seems to be win-win for both Adobe and Apple. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out and if iPhone App development in Windows/Flash is as seamless as Adobe is claiming. But if it is, al
