This is a very exciting development that will offer great long-term benefits to the web. Relying on cross-platform fonts when building web pages was always challenging and limiting. I'm looking forward to this expansion of the font direc

"Unfortunately, the development of those standards has been incredibly slow and political" I think this is a critical point. It appears that most large software companies participate in standards bodies, simply to look out for their own

I wonder if, over time, this trend will lead to a shift in what is considered acceptable writing. Once the "texting" teenagers of today take positions of leadership in government and corporations, they may be more accepting of this writing

It's a wise move for Google and was likely planned from the outset. Google, primarily an advertising company, was just looking for a way to generate interest in their new mobile platform. It's unlikely that they were planning to stay in t

Excellent article. I agree that distracting elements on a website impact conversions and should be avoided. However, there is definitely a difference between a well planned "clean" website and an unprofessional "cluttered" website. The p

Has the font rendering improved on 10.04? I had to do quite a bit of tweaking on 9.04 to get Firefox fonts to looks close Windows/Mac. Regardless, this upgrade looks great!

The nice thing about Ubuntu/Gnome is how easy it is to customize. As long as Emerald Theme Manager still works on 10.04, this release should be great. I also prefer the window buttons on the right and it's good to know that we have a choic

The most significant change to me is the expanding of the "More Options" on the search results page by default. This page is critical for Google's ad revenue, so I assume they are measuring any reduction in adwords CTR and comparing that w

This is one of the few books I've kept on my bookshelf for many years and still read through it every so often for a C syntax refresher. It's a great read since C syntax and conventions are still so pervasive in many of today's languages.

I'm running Emerald Theme Manager on my Gnome-based Ubuntu laptop and it already looks great. However, it's nice to see innovation happening in the Gnome desktop.

As a long-time Kohana 2.x user, this article shows how promising Kohana 3 is as a framework. Once things stabalize a bit more with v3, it will be interesting to test out HMVC.

With total control over the iPhone OS, I wonder if Apple will slowly start repositioning OS X as an operating system for power users and focus more on the iPhone OS for it's consumer-line products. A basic iLife/iWork suite for iPhone OS

Interesting that there is no mention of Slicehost. I wonder if Slicehost will exist in the longterm or will it's customers get folded into the Rackspace Server offering. Coincidently, I'm in the process of searching for a host and am close

With the success of the Appstore, Apple also has little incentive to invest heavily in enhancing the web interface. In the long-term, web apps will likely be better supported on Android, since the web browser is Google's major focus.
