I don't think that's the plan, because if they want old XP users to upgrade, that would not be sufficient, since old XP users of course want their old XP apps to keep working.

Our righteous indignation seems a little shrill here. The fact that he was awarded $1.6M is being glossed over -- clearly this was not, in hindsight, a reasonable procedure, and everyone recognizes it.

It's actually a runtime switch. A compiled x86 binary that uses extra-wide number-crunching instructions (SSE etc) must also work on older processors that don't have those instructions, so it will have two or more code paths. The

I believe you -- I also have 2-3 y.o memories. But most people I know don't, so I can understand their skepticism. I've encountered one or two young children (age 2-3) who seem to remember their own births, but those memories defi

Wouldn't inequality make efficiency worse ? On an individual level, it would seem that poverty makes your life less efficient -- you end up treating your own time as less valuable, and so you do less productive things, such washing ou

Stayed right next door in another "Mansion" place -- with my whole 5-person family. Had a great time. We got one of the few family-sized rooms. Big enough for two beds + a bathroom. And if one person got out of the way, the othe

Sounds like it's time for a "design pattern" or "best practice" -- that is, covering up for a tool's faults. What if you treat DropBox as a raw, strict hierarchical store and never use it directly, but only link into it from elsewhere? Mov

In China, Yum's KFC is a luxury brand, according to my Chinese friends. It is more expensive and higher quality than its Chinese competitors. I know that's hard to believe from the vantage point of the U.S., where KFC and Taco Bell are pret

Instead of a string, how about a continuous stream of rocket fuel? You'd need a large enough black hole that: * the gravitational acceleration at the event horizon can be overcome by your rocket engines * the tidal forces at the event

It's more about escape velocity. Your neural signals would not be able to escape to an observer "outside" the black hole -- I mean outside most of its gravitational influence -- but they could move around locally. The larger the black hole,
