I block distracting sites/apps from 6:30am-6:30pm, with browser extensions/app blockers. It's a pretty simple and free solution, takes maybe 10 minutes to install and configure. Yes there are fairly easy ways to get around th

Yes, they're A/B testing multiple things with NSFW content. Up until recently I was in the "you must use the mobile app instead of mobile site to see nsfw content" group. I'm not sure exactly when that changed for m

Not having credit history will absolutely require you to take on a higher interest rate for your mortgage. It's probably 10's of thousands of dollars difference over the length of the loan, depending on how big the mortgage amount

I can't give a first hand account of either, but yes Woodstock '99 was generally considered much more violent than the original, which was expressed in various ways: vandalism/looting, setting fires, rapes. Maybe the original

I read your comment before it was flagged. I assume it was removed because you broke the first rule of this board: "Be Kind, Don't be snarky". Your followup comment here also seems to break that rule. In general the combative

I don't, but regardless the US doesn't seem very close to direct democracy to me. So I disagree with OP when they say we're getting a glimpse of what direct democracy looks like right now.

It seems to me that since the rise of social media, politicians are voting in a way that's less representative of their constituents, not more. By that measure social media is bringing us farther from direct democracy, not closer.

I don't really view that as evil though, just basic market dynamics. Similarly, CVS sells cheerios for $7 a box. I don't think CVS is evil, sometimes I'm just lazy.

One of the most Hacker News comments every written. A dismissive comment about a diy home project because you'd rather be critical of someone else than build something yourself.

Worth noting that carpenter bees are also furry fat bees, and often confused for bumble bees. Carpenter bees tend to be a bit shinier, and at least around me, bigger. Which is how I can tell them apart.

That's the cool thing about science, it can't be refuted by one person's anecdotal experiences.

Seems like you're projecting a bit. I didn't see the person your responding to make any judgement about a life with a partner/kids vs one without.

What evolutionary pressure is giving an advantage to humans who can digest plastic? The article is talking about "bugs" as in microbes, bacteria. Not animals.

A lot of good advice here which you can try to implement, but at the the end of the day if this is affecting your day to day life then this is a mental health issue. I would recommend therapy. They'll give you some similar advice as th

It's useful if you want to copy, say a bulleted list over, or keep various bold/italicized words. I would say it's usually 50/50 whether I want to keep the formatting or not. But either way most applications support both
