patio11 has a huge and well known bias here, which is that he wants to claim, not necessarily with evidence, that all inefficiency is caused by governments and not by the private sector. A comparison of tax filing in the United States with

The fact that no one used it doesn't mean that building it was a mistake. Maybe the purchase officer got it wrong, but the salesperson who requested it be built got it right, since the deal did in fact depends on it.

Rather than erect signs, they should change the official speed limit on that road to 10 miles per hour. Google takes into account speed restrictions when choosing routes, apparently by assuming that you always drive exactly at the limit. Th

A stroller is literally an urban vehicle for transporting an infant. "Walking a dog" is the name for a type of ambulatory exercise which most dogs require daily. Car seats exist to make cars workable; cars do not exist in order to

I think and hope that middle-to-long term vehicle design adapts away from the constraints of ICE engines and towards sweet spots for electric. Eg, when batteries are heavier than petrol, carrying enough fuel for a 200 mile journey every tim

I don't think this is fair. Another underage person found guilty of the same hacks got an 18-month rehabilitation order. This basically means severe restrictions on going out and computer use together with involvement and monitoring by

Wind turbines have a max windspeed beyond which they stop generating, as it's too risky to let the blades spin that fast.

My mortgage company charges interest based on the number of days in the month divided by 365. I have replicated their calculation like this. I'm not sure what they do in leap years - there are at least 3 distinct approaches.

It makes no sense to suggest that three external directors would vote out a CEO and the Chairman against the chief scientist/founder/principal's wishes.

That doesn't mean it's not a personal scandal. If Brockman disagreed with the board about the advisability of firing him for whatever personal scandal it was, this is how you'd expect things to play out.

Some reductions via Conway's method give non-trivial Collatz problems even though other simple techniques show the halting question for those machines to be trivial; the Conway reduction sometimes reduces trivial Turing machines to non

I have a PhD in pure math. Nothing I learnt specifically in that PhD is needed for my job, and in fact, I do a job where most people who do the same thing as me don't have a PhD. So its value even for signalling is limited. However, I&

'trivial' isn't a mathematical concept. If no one has shown why this problem is trivial, it isn't trivial.

I think the point here is that it was not known whether all 3,3 halting problems are reducible to trivial Collatz-like problems. Unless someone is able to observe that sligicko's is actually trivial, then this provides a counterexample
