> Society has a vital interest in reintegrating people who have been punished Food for thought, but this is only true if we release them. For most of history, we simply executed criminals. In most of the world, that's still the case

But the DA and police chief choose not to pursue property crimes or even assaults... the officers themselves are probably not conspiring, but it's a culture of "leave the criminals be" which leads to needing this extra protec

You're right, it does seem like a strong counterexample. But I'm not sure how cops would fix this one directly either - they surely can't station an officer at the store all the time. Part of my point is that they spend so mu

Look at the obesity statistics by age, this is something that will pay off far into the future imo. One good thing my parents taught me is that vegetables can be eaten without cheese or salt, and I currently eat healthier than anyone I know

It's probably impossible for the store to solve it, hence the closing. This problem is really up to the city to solve, and it doesn't seem the city is interested. Gated communities and all that.

In my experience, police are more likely to focus on corporate property crimes than violent crime. It seems to be a sick game of incentives gone wrong... the police department just needs to grow, so it needs more money. So it protects the c

I don't support busing them out, and actually, I used to acknowledge them and treat them as humans. Eventually, it became a large time sink, and not a pleasant one (give a mouse a muffin). Out of curiosity, do you live in a large city?

In many cities, they are bused out to become someone else's problem. I'm not sure what the solution is, but many of these people are obviously extremely unhappy, and they show no sign of changing soon. If I viewed them as part of

Just fyi, I'm about as far from a sheltered techie type as they come... since 18, I've lived in shared room situations with strangers on Craigslist for most of my life, often in the cheapest and most unsafe neighborhoods. I actual

I'm glad this has been your experience.. my experience in cities is largely limited - Portland, LA, Seattle, NYC. For me, I've encountered huge amounts of harassment in the first three cities. Oddly in NYC I didn't have a pro

I'm sorry, on further consideration, you're right about the salaries. I think with some charities (like feeding children), my expectation would be that the salaries would be very low, and the costs of providing the "good"

I think I can agree to disagree with most people replying, I consider it highly misleading that they prod users to donate when using Firefox, and don't mention that Firefox is not funded by donations: https://donate.mozilla.

https://assets.mozilla.net/annualreport/2018/mozilla-fdn-201... Unless I'm misreading something, 64% of their expenses in 2018 went to salaries.
