If you have a ton of embedded if/else statements you're doing it wrong. Only one if/else is required. Thanks for giving me a course about game design and asking questions obviously not answered in Chapter 1. Where can I send you money? <

Marry me! I mean, join the team! But seriously, Chapter 2 is all about deconstructing the game. It's easy at first.. but then it gets harder. Erasing your traces... reverse-engineering protocols.. introducing you to netsec against your will

See: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5796039 You're not in a prison. Much in the story is left to your imagination, but I can tell you this: you are very much a "free" agent in this universe. However, your value is constantly under t

You're probably at the beginning of the game, and you probably need to put your answer within single quotes (e.g. answer 'yes'). Not much error checking yet..

The @xzoor and @door similarity is a fair point - although @xzoor has a kind of emotional sensibility to me, I don't know if could change it. @portal would work for the door, though ;) Non-human names are kinda voluntary. It's a hostile uni

Oh. See that's another game design decision. Nothing prevents you from typing: unlock @door, <action to get the key> But when doing user testing, lots of non-coders got stuck at this point. It's clearer to them when things ha

Thanks for the feedback. See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5795893 for context - window.open gets called on 'open'. If any HNers have ideas for restricting what gets called, I'm all ears. Source is on GitHub, at https://github.com

Hey, if you know CoffeeScript and feel confident, everything is fair game. The game is supposed to be accessible to non-coders as well, hence all the hand-holding. If you feel frustrated because the first chapter is too simple, you're gonna

See, that's a very interesting "bug" that was reported to me before. Here's a little behind the scenes: your answers are actually CoffeeScript that get compiled on the client (along with some support code for each question) and eval'ed. Sin

Yup, would've added more analytics if I had the time - consider this a first foray into the world of "let's teach people stuff without them being even aware of it because they're caught in the story". Hopefully! This is an experiment. Expec

Agreed. Google is really contacting anyone these days. It's probably obvious that I'm not a good fit there and I still got an e-mail. Most of my friends have, too, so I don't consider it exclusive at all. It was still a good occasion to wri

Hey there, thanks for what has to be the most insightful and constructive comment of the thread! I agree with what you're saying. To me, all this is part of a bigger issue which is the "mass culture". That society is only comfortable with h

You're right, that part was definitely excessive/simplistic. There are probably hundreds of small start-ups trying to 'fix' mainstream video distribution right now. The point is, their scale is ridiculous compared to the ones I've listed. F

Reading the thread before commenting is a good idea - you're not adding anything new to the conversation. I didn't submit the post to HN, nor did I choose the headline (which I disagree with). I'm aware the recruiter in question can't chang

Granted, there's very little chance that the recruiter herself will find interest in the whole post. Hence the blog post. As others have pointed out, recruiters are trained to skip down to the call for action, so the fact that 85% of it is

Entirely agree. Big company acqui(hi)ring smaller start-ups is a different problem than increasing centralization. Both equally worrying imho, though.
