The advantage of Homebrew is that it is modern, small, and simple. Obviously apt is better, but apt also requires that you maintain a large repository of binaries. Homebrew is slow[1], but because it builds from source it is trivial to crea

This the guy that wrote "Node.js is cancer", he basically admits to being a troll in reddit comments[1] as well. I don't care if Node.js is good or not (well maybe I will if I end up using it some day) but calling it cancer is unproductive

Ok, so what is the appeal of fixed gear bikes? They can't be that good for exercising/fun, it seems like not being able to shift would make riding sloooow anywhere that isn't Kansas.

That's interesting, I always immediately removed the Firefox/Evolution/Help(?) launchers so I guess I would have voided it right away.

The traditional Gnome desktop wasn't that polished. Panel was a disaster, because everything was positioned absolutely, instead of "this is to the left/right of this, here's the large space separating the left and right halves" all of you

I'm still not entirely sure what iCloud actually is . It syncs ~/Library/Preferences? And it lets you redownload music? And I can remotely wipe my laptop I guess? But, what is the actual service here? I switched in on in System Preferences

The other benefit is that I don't have to own a train (although that would be quite awesome). Buying monthly Metrocards for a year will cost you about $1200, significantly less than car payments, gas, insurance payments, repair payments,

Well, you can take the battery out. I've taken mine out multiple times: once to dry out my computer, and again to replace the top case after drying out my computer failed to make the keyboard work again. There's actually very little about

"Work of beauty" is relative. The field that we're talking about here is video game server browser design, which isn't exactly known for being cutting edge. In general, game designers have almost always produced interfaces that are passable

I never had any problems, and I have to say it is easily the best server browser I've ever used. Valve's pre-TF2 updates one (still toggleable back on) is probably the only other one I've actually liked before. It's a huge improvement ove

I am curious about that too, unless these designers aren't very good and are just trying to translate print media to the web without considering the ramifications of the platform (see: almost every iPad magazine). Flash isn't a terrible p

The performance isn't an issue, but Google Docs still isn't anywhere near the quality of Keynote or Word. iCloud will remove the advantage of instant synchronization, so there aren't many upsides (as a user) to avoiding the native app that

For what it's worth, you can still do it with Applescript: osascript -e "set volume 0.1" I don't really know anything about Applescript, but presumably it wouldn't be hard to hook it into the Shift+Vol keys.

The quiet place isn't so quiet then OS X doesn't have a volume level low enough for your headphones :) Yes, I have to run iTunes at 50% volume, on the lowest rectangle for system volume.

Keep in mind that iTunes had already done the hard work for Winamp. iTunes has to walk your directory structure, open each file, and read the ID3 tags. That takes real, actual time, especially on a spinning disk. iTunes is probably slower t

I actually don't think the tag editor is a big deal. The only "tag editing" program I use is Picard, and it's just once for each file, which gets it perfectly tagged, renamed, and placed in the proper directory. Oh, here is another one that

As far as I can tell, it's mostly just an ugly version of iTunes. * Visuals aside, the UI is basically iTunes. It has the exact same elements in the exact same places, except Winamp looks like a tacky GTK+ theme. * I couldn't figure out how

In that sort of situation I would definitely prefer the ternary, although nesting them sans (redundant, but explicit) parenthesis isn't something I would do. I also like the somewhat Rubyesque one liners for simplistic if/else pairs. I just

Ah, that's exactly the thing I try to avoid. Presumably you're going to use those variables, right? So, unless there's truly an issue (conditional assignment that is too complex for a ternary) why not declare them at the point of use? C99 l
