Your original comment was questioning why a 24% VAT is considered to be outstandingly high. It's the highest rate of VAT in the EU, and broadly speaking taxes in the EU are already higher than in nations of equivalent technological and

Same as Norway, indeed. But Norway has implemented just 5,000 pieces of EU legislation in the last 22 years, whereas the UK has, on average, implemented 3,000 pieces per year . [I'm sticking to Norway, because it is the region that I

You're comparing income tax with sales tax. In the UK, on a salary of £40k (i.e. professional mid-career engineer), before you touch the money, the government takes about 25% for income tax and national insurance. Then, they take 20%

I note with some amusement the difference in the way that foreign income for private citizens is of interest to the IRS and yet foreign income for corporations can be left abroad and remains untaxed. One would have hoped that it may be the

They may earnestly believe in it, but they cannot provide a shred of evidence that it exists and all authority that claims that it does is inevitably found to be either a) mistaken or b) fraudulent. Very intelligent, otherwise rational peop

I agree that STEM makes you more employable. But how many of those jobs are in science ? There's a lot of engineers, accountants, actuaries, teachers, etc. out there who got a degree in physics, maths or biology.

Tangential to the article, I have two hypotheses: 1) There is not a shortage of scientists. There's loads of kids going to graduate school to become servants for mediocre, yet politically-connected scientists. Then, once they have spen
