Personally, I don't agree with a lot of Dr. Harell's definitions for SL and ML to begin with. He mostly talks about clinical trials, a field I don't have much knowledge about. But a lot of the arguments seem to attack a straw

The Introduction to Statistical Learning book is great. But, and I think this is not stated enough, there is a big difference between statistical learning and machine learning in terms of how you approach a problem. The subject matter might

Facebook's motto: 1. Implement out-of-touch privacy antagonistic methods to earn money. 2. Face public backlash. 3. Say, we are sorry. We are stopping it (not totally). We are going to improve. 4. Repeat.

I love Google Keep. It's simple, syncs great and overall it's a great tool for keeping notes. But I am trying to switch to something else. I don't want to wake up one morning and see a blog post from Google saying they are sh

Stanford is also included in the lawsuit. And it is not about getting admission, it's about the application fee they paid without getting a fair process. Read the article.

With all its hype in RL, I am yet to see significant real life problems solved with it. I am afraid with all the funding going into it, and nothing to show for except being able to play complex games, this might contribute to the mistrust i

Did you find the Upenn course on probability? I have been looking for it for a long time. The professor was absolutely brilliant.

I would like to see someone explain the math behind recurrent neural networks. Feed-forward neural networks are fairly straight-forward, and there are many, many blog posts explaining them already.

If you want to learn linear algebra by coding in python, this is hands down the best book out there. Coding the Matrix - Philip Klein [0] It used to have a Coursera course, but I think it's been taken down. The website has videos of th

At the heart of the machine learning that I do with pytorch, most of the errors come from wrong sizes of matrix multiplications, or some matrix input that has a wrong size somewhere in the middle of the net. How much an extra layer of wrapp

Really sad. I would think if there is no one to take care of the parks then it's only common sense to have them closed to tourists.

Really grateful to the FAIR team for Pytorch. I use deep learning for computational biology. Pytorch lets me focus on the problem rather than nitpicking with the framework (looking at you tensorflow) to make something work.

There's a bill from a Kansas republican senator that is trying to remove the country specific quotas for EB2s which will probably benefit the Indian and Chinese people. What chance it might have of passing the senate?
