A cost-per-minute clock for meetings is a very striking reminder of the cost of dragging things on. While using it for meetings with lawyers is of course very fun (everybody dislikes lawyers), I find it to be even more needed for internal i

That is not the point of the site. From the inspiration linked above, it is clear that it is about comparing salaries in a single firm or in a similar fairly homogeneous setting.

When teaching our students concurrent programming using Erlang we never actually mentioned recursion and state immutability. With some careful hand-holding in the first exercises, most of the students seemed to be able to do fine. During th

Welcome to Sweden, I hope you like it here :) On a more serious note, I hope that it works out for you and your wife. Sweden is not always the best either, but at least spouses tend to get residency and AFAIK foreign expertise can typically

I really don't understand Denmark when it comes to migration issues. They make it so hard to move there for non-EU citizens that it is ridiculous. As an example, I know of more than one married couple with one Dane and one non-eu citizen th

The problem with "when hungry, eat", is that hunger is not really a good indicator for sustenance needs for humans. Living in western countries, we are surrounded by easily obtainable and addictive foods and nutrients. If we let hunger cont

I fully agree with that. I love to sleep, and like my 8 hours of sleep per night.

I think that you are missing the fact that short-sleepers wake up well-rested, even though their sleep-time is much shorter and would not suffice to give us normals enough rest. I'm not sure if there has been any actual studies that show th

I used to know one of these short sleepers. He had never felt the need to sleep more than about two hours per night, and did so for his whole life (which was respectably long, no noticeable side-effects from the exceptionally short sleep).

Sure, as long as you are working with a standard and linear memory model. The assumption that size_t and ptrdiff_t can store a pointer may break down on segmented memory architectures for example. If you want to code against the standard in

Thanks. That comment was my biggest hitting one ever, so my average will probably jump quite a bit. Funny that it should be in a meta-karma thread. I do see what you mean, I didn't think you were discarding comments from low karma commenter

I seldom comment on HN, and when I do I typically do so in threads that are somewhat dormant, with little activity. I don't really care about karma/votes at all, I just say something when I think I have something of value to add. My comment

There is a correlation (most good CS researchers publish in journals), but it is not as strong as in physics. Also, the lead times are much longer. In CS conferences typically play the role that journals play in most other fields. The fact

You do realize that the bulked up guys probably weigh a lot more than you do so the number of achieved pull-ups is not an interesting measure? The really bulked-up ones most likely train for muscle mass, not for any useful activity.

There are lots of algorithms with very high time-compleity that are still usefull in practice. One nice example is the decision-algorithm for Presburger arithmetic which runs in O(2^2^n).

The Lady Gaga figure is not relevant. It was for the first months of public Spotify, before they had any real revenue. Since the payout is revenue based and not fixed (at least as far as I've heard), the level of revenue impacts the payouts
