As far as I can tell from their homepage (lovefilm.se), there is no streaming available. Where did you find it?

They don't have streaming in Scandinavia yet, only the UK and Germany.

OTOH, simplex is very efficient already. Average-case complexity for random matrices is polynomial, and there are some interesting results that extend beyond that (see http://arxiv.org/abs/cs/0111050 ).

That explains why I thought the game was so hard :) I feel that the experience of controlling both robots was very interesting though. The split-screen behavior worked very nicely for that.

I suspect the same. I've considered reading the one of the books in English also just to see if they are improved. I found Dan Brown to be slightly less annoying in Swedish than in English, since some parts had been cleaned up.

I enjoyed the books for their ideas also. The fact that the presentation is flawed is unfortunately a hindrance that breaks the spell ("oh no, not that trope once again"). On the other hand, some authors are so good at the presentation that

Funny, I place Stieg Larsson and Dan Brown in the same section: writers who are good at constructing a compelling story, but not so good in actually writing it down. With Stieg Larsson, I got really annoyed with the amount of boring exposit

Actually, it is kind of hard to make a secure solution that takes arbitrary submitted source code, compiles it, runs it, and finally times it with high precision. Sandboxing in a VM is unfortunately not feasible since timing is very hard to

True. For many cases, the dates of the jail-time to serve can even be negotiated to some extent.

One of them, Carl Lundström, has quite some money. For the other guys, I think they don't have very much in terms of personal means (unless the prosecutions version where they earned lots of money is true).

I'm not a GPGPU expert, but one thing that is easy to forget is that floating point types have a well-functioning integer subset. For example, on 32-bit computers it can be beneficial to use 64-bit doubles for extended precision in integer

The memory model is nicely specified, given that the program is race-free. If it isn't, then all bets are off. There are a lot of programs that are not race-free (although he races in themselves might be benign), and as such have a very wea

What would you say the essential difference is betwee pre-empted coroutines with a scheduler and threads? The only thing I could think of is that with coroutines one can explicitly pass control over to another coroutine, but that is somethi

A lot of my earlier work was in formal specification of JVM thread behaviour, so I was very interested in what the standard said and required. I agree that in practice, it probably will map to threads, which is unfortunate. The experiments

It is possible to manage it manually using Executors. Take a look at thread pools in http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/concurr... for an overview look at what to do. I hope that it works better than the last time I trie

In my case it was about trying to make Java threads work in a situation where pre-emptive scheduling was needed for very many threads. The problem with the JVMs I tried was that they all started too many OS threads, and I couldn't get them

Any limits depend on the particular JVM that you are using. In practice one needs to experiment. A few years back I did some comparisons between Java and Erlang with respect to the number of threads the system could handle. Somewhere around

Well, the value of a sympathizing pilot that is willing to smuggle in truly dangerous stuff is probably higher than the value of the average guy that is willing to crash a plane with himself in it. Using the (unscreened) pilot, one could ge

Just curious, do you have any good examples of very large scale systems that need system-wide transactions? I might miss something obvious (I'm not actually in the database area), but I couldn't come up with a good example.

Actually, for 9x9 Sudoku doing any more advanced propagation is pointless, since it will slow down the time to find the solution (assuming a reasonably fast search process). If one wants to solve 9x9 Sudokus without search, full propagation

Slightly more efficient, and still easy to do, is to use one hand for 0-9 (thumb counts as five), and the other for 0,10,20,...,90. Easy counting, setting, and reading of the current number.
