This is a really important point, a lot of comments in this thread seem to think the article is related to proposals for new laws of physics.

It seems like this is the us equivalent to me. The nice thing about this approach is you don’t have to use so much wrapping paper like in the linked article’s video. Both the banana and sandwich come in their own case.

I bought a plant for my office about four years ago. Recently I was looking at it, and just thought “I don’t recall the like this anymore”. But what am I going to do? I can’t just kill my plant. I have no yard to put it in. It looks like we

So many comments in this thread are saying that scientists are bad programmers, but even a great programmer can make mistakes like this. The solution isn’t related to better programmers, but instead for users to treat codes as instruments,

When looking at these radar systems, I always notice there are hurricane like spirals south near Antarctica. Does anyone know if those are actually as powerful as hurricanes, and do they make landfall?

While I think discussing whether military research should be patented is an interesting question, I think the nature of this particular patent (that is, that it’s total nonsense) kind of trumps any speculation here.

I’m not sure why any company would pay money to advertise there, when you can easily buy upvotes instead. Sure it takes a little more creativity and a longer investment, but if the current front page is any guide, there are plenty of organi

The main goal of restricting a governments power isn’t to stop corruption, but to prevent tyranny of the majority [1]. A government elected by the populace is little comfort to minorities. 1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki&

Basically, think of divesting as an advertisement. Every time a major player does it, the public hears a pro environment message, and leaves thinking climate change is something to act on now, and that green energy is the future. And public

Agreed. I do know some projects that do a lot of code generation that end up with huge files, though this is probably largely caused by C++’s templates forcing too much into headers (which newer versions fix). It’d also be nice if parallel

Wikipedia articles like this bug me. It is a well written introduction to the project, but why is that on the Wikipedia? Put that on your own website! I wish more people would follow wikipedia’s very clean and easy style. This is of course

I don’t know about calling it manipulative. I remember taking the ACT, and struggling to plan out one of my essays. It was something like “tell us about a book that inspired you”. So I changed details about the plot so it all fit nicely and

Even if phonics are not used when reading, they still have an advantage for writing. Rarely in my adult life have I found myself sounding out a word in a book unless it is deliberately ridiculous (as your example). But I definitely sound ou

In the article they mention an experiment where they showed readers words in and out of context, to determine whether cues are important. It seems they could repeat this with phonetically simple and phonetically difficult words, and see if

David Epstein kind of makes this point in The Sports Gene. We think modern training and diets make us better athletes then our ancestors, but really much of the progress on world record times have come from better tracks and shoes.

While we’re doing “as well as”s about Elsevier... I hate how soulless the journals feel. Recently, I wanted to read a quite old paper as it connected to my recent research. It was published in the 60s, in a journal that has housed some extr

This Rio Journal seems to pride itself on letting you publish non traditional papers. In this case, we have something that seems clearly marked as a hypothesis. I won’t comment on the value of such an approach. But I will say that it’s frus
