Nice idea, but... you're asking for money? That would be a nice thing to put in the headline or somewhere on the page. I thought you were going to tell me about what's in the book. I closed the video when you got to the money part, crank

The fact that a big company has filed a patent doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to make a product. Usually it means that they care about that area in general and need some amount of patent "presence", some asset that they can ta

In the general case yes. But this title, without the author, is more or less the same as at least 10 articles I've already read. When everybody is chipping in their opinion, "X's opinion on Y" is a better way of mentally separating them t

In general I agree, but in this case it's really helpful for disambiguation from the dozens of other "what I think about Go" posts that people have been writing. Incidentally, I agree with him w.r.t. lack of exceptions being a big barrier.

Can't agree with this enough. I'm a programmer, and I solve lots of problems. Build lots of things. But not only do I not know how to sell anything, I don't even know anybody who knows how, or know how to meet anybody who knows how. And

It's not a web service, but I always thought Qt had one of the best APIs out there in terms of style, consistency, and documentation. It's worth looking at just from a packaging perspective.

I'm just hitting eclipse after a long stint in Visual Studio. Favorite feature so far: hit ctrl+3 to give you a quicksilver-like command line full of useful stuff. The completion is a little finicky, but it's good enough to be useful. Al

"Them's fightin' words!" is what I said out loud when I read that. I've programmed extensively in C# and barely at all in Objective-C, and I wouldn't say such a thing. C# is a very nice language, but such things really come down to tool s

But there's a catch, isn't there? There's always a catch. At work (Big Company TM), we call it the "MS Happy Path." If you're on it, you're golden and life is good. The overall development experience is great. If you're not, well, suck

Optimize the basic cases for speed. Not needing to touch the mouse (as MrMatt points out) is a good start. If you make it dead simple and lightning fast to open, close, and forward defects, you'll win a lot of fans.

Your cleanup argument holds true for C and its ilk, but not for anything else. In C you DO have to do manual cleanup, but in any language with exceptions you can (and should) do that in a finally block. Or in C++, via one of the many scop

I like Kobe very much. It feels like a very 'international' place downtown, but it's not overly large. Once you leave downtown, things can get very local. It's also also just a hop away from Osaka and two from Kyoto, which makes it a day

It's hard to call the office ribbon UI 100% bad. I've used it to some extent and it's actually grown on me. It's certainly weird and different, but they clearly put a lot of thought into it. In particular, the allocation of tasks to the
