linux-vdso.so is mostly about sharing a data page so syscalls can be optimised away. It's not for all the kernel API entry points (and it's userland specific so the VDSO varies with the libc version according to which features it

"curl ... | bash" makes me run away from a project. There is the reductive argument that basically everything you download is arbitrary code, but throwing away the code that is run seems uniquely silly. https://news.yco

The barriers/costs for pushing AI generated noise are so low, I agree there's the potential for it to overwhelm human written content. In a sense it effectively happened to email, again with lots of $doom, but the timescale turned

I absolutely agree this kind of nontrivial work can be done in a way that is woefully inefficient/impractical. My EWI, approx 85m2 of graphite polystyrene with an embedded CO2[1] of ~15kg/m2 is equivalent to approximately 1.5 year

AFAICT libsystemd is the "blessed" way of a daemon interacting with systemd and its notification protocol. libsystemd is something of a kitchen sink library now, it wasn't always so: there used to be separate libsystemd-daemo

"reduce the attack surface" is Security 101. Noting again that sshd doesn't natively use xz/liblzma (just libz) or systemd, so I don't think I need to point out where the billowing attack surface is ;) Apache (by wa

Better still, start the clock so wrap-around is imminent and inevitable: https://lwn.net/Articles/22874/ "make jiffies wrap 5 min after boot" That stops a whole lot of silly failures right there.

I was simply marveling at what could be done without on a ZX Spectrum, when contemporary 8-bits usually had some mix of sound, scroll, sprite/video hardware.

In my country (Ireland) you more or less have to use professional installers for anything non-trivial if you want to get any sort of state grant/refund to cover the outrageous costs (with VAT piled on top). I did a retrofit, I can'

You're conflating electricity generation and total energy use. Yes, 13% is crap, we're highly (and ridiculously) reliant on imported fossil fuels. With respect to electricity generation then, Ireland is in the middle with 39% ren

Interesting. With EWI and internal insulation the telescopic duct is nearly maxed out as the total wall thickness is close to 500mm, but 50% of that is empty space. I though I might be able to get a secondary heat mass into that in future.

Winter and latitude, not longitude should of course guide the selection. Dublin today, Nov 30th, marks the start of the 6 week period where daylight is less than 8 hours, IMHO only wintertime (UTC) makes sense here. Oddly IST, Irish Standa
