On the surface, this looks more positive to QCOM. However, I feel a good long term play for APPL would be to negotiate a cap on royalties for all LTE shipments through litigation like this, then fade in their own silicon in some developing

I hesitated to write programming (or coding!) but saw more posts and came back to peek. Through this, I've learnt product and market fit that made tangible changes in peoples lives - the coding remains a personal rich reward, but the p

I'm just in the middle of launching an LTE-M based device that contains a primary power source (a 12v vehicle battery) with a supercap for backup power when the battery dies. Average power at the moment is around ~3mA to keep an LTE-M

When leading an Android platform team several years ago, we enable the OpenGL backend to Skia to see if it would accelerate general UI rendering. The conclusion was after a whole bunch of bug fixes (OpenGL ES 2.0 IIRC), it ran but (a) ate u

Hey Robert - this is awesome! In a previous life, I spent a bunch of time within a large semiconductor company pushing for full source releases in the same spirit - it was successful in a single instance, but an uphill battle in most. Cyano

SiFive have opened up all the digital pieces of the design (namely HDL and SW), but a lot more is needed to make an IC. Analog I/O, power supplies, clocks, PLLs to name but a few. Currently "open source IC's" extend to t

I hate to "enjoy" listening to these stories, but I always take the time to hear a speaker out when available from either war. I feel its not just critical to record but also replay these stories, to explain this historic period t

A while back (~1.5 years), I learnt of a chip being developed that was under 80c in volume, came with BLE, buzzer, touch, flash, ram, built in power supplies, display and an 80MHz ARM plus included driver circuits for analog, segment digita

It seems incredible that this is the source code for the $999 product originally destined to be available this year. I'm extremely familiar with OBD|CAN and car networks - the embedded code alone is an essay in how trivial something ca

I found a niche in a ASIC startup environment back in 2005 (5 years post CS degree and work experience to that date mostly being C/C++) as being "the guy that didn't want to work on the CPU" and where verilog engineers w

From Wikipedia: >The ARM 1 processor was clocked at 8 MHz, and was fitted with 2 MB or 4 MB of RAM. This is absolutely fascinating. So much RAM in 1985!

When I first heard about the co-processor extensions in ARM, I spent hours dreaming up a dynamic FPGA accelerated co-processor that could have dynamic 'instructions' swapped in based on typical work loads it was receiving. The com

I've really enjoyed Westworld so far - GoT lost me after the red wedding (too much... television stress) and 3 episodes of this restored my faith in sunday night episode treats. So much reddit theories to read :)

Mixed feelings on this - huge congrats to ARM friends but I feel it's 1 act too short for an exit like this. I'd love to have seen a British owned tech company higher up the Global 2000 before transferring ownership.
