I agree - this (to me) is indicative of the difference between an application that intends to be useful to me vs. one that is useful to the provider. One falls into the woodwork, presenting a painfully standardized and predictable interface

Some tools (Crucible, at the least) allow you to code-review based off of a diff that specifies the version it is applied to.

Facebook's "export tool" generates an incomplete static HTML version of some of the data you put into Facebook. The friend list wouldn't really be of any use unless people had unique names.

Everything you've listed except for a "brand" (and the usage here seems pretty ill-defined) is very A/B testable. I'm not really sure how to refute that, but the idea that they aren't is ridiculous. Would that be effective and produce g

I don't believe you can in OS X - even though it's vector drawn, a lot of assets are raster. Apple pushed (weakly) a "Resolution Independent" interface in 10.4 (I think) that would have promised drawing the screen at whatever DPI you want w

Just like with violent video games, the internet doesn't make people feel disconnected, or turn them into sociopaths. It enables people who would rather be disconnected to disconnect themselves, and gives sociopaths the ability to do far

I think more importantly, serving the public interest is not the same thing as serving the popular interest. I do not approve of FBI methods, but in the pedantic case I do recognize that a fundamental part of a republican (little r) gov

The behavior being stopped is repeated POSTs to create new accounts - a spammer would instead have to GET the form every couple of hours (or if they don't realize the trick, possibly each time), something they'd hopefully do from the same I

I feel the opposite - I'm learning more, because if I'm spending the time to read something, I have to think critically about it and do research sometimes in order to have a good interpretation. It takes more time, but it's real learning, i

I'm sure there's some deep context to that - could you share/link? Claiming that kind of experience juxtaposed with an article like this screams of the importance of us drawing our own conclusions rather than taking either of your words for

Not many people seem to be noting this, but I think it bears noting that it seems very much true that Apple isn't tracking anything; your iPhone is. There are legitimate potential worries about that, but "ZOMG Apple is Big Brother" is the

It may not be, though. We have good reason to believe that most IE6 users are using IE6 because it is the browser installed by IT on locked-down work computers. It doesn't seem unreasonable (to me) that a significant portion, though probabl

Democratizing technology isn't fundamentally about Freedom and Openness and Fairness. It's about making technology useable by everyday people. You can do that by making everyone an engineer, or by placing arbitrary limits that increase the

On that thread, it's important to look at new breeder reactors and Thorium reactors before denouncing waste from nuclear reactors as a permanent problem. We have technology that is much better, much safer, and less damaging than even what w
