As far as I know, you don't need releases and upgrade functionality to make use of the code-upgrade hooks. It simply works without them. Releases and upgrades do make it simpler to synchronize what needs to be taken down in what order, rest

I am currently writing Learn You Some Erlang. I have never read one of the 'For Dummies' book, have no idea what tone they employ or what kind of readers they assume they have. I can say, however, that there already exist a few books on Erl

I'm not sure any type system can even notice that I returned True instead of False, had a 'not' where I shouldn't, that I forgot about operator precedence in some spot, that the string I return indeed has the format asked by in a specificat

Only that packages ending with 'A' are supposed not to be production ready. Every 'B' version is advertised as good for production. There should be backwards compatibility between two major releases, but not more. You could likely go from R

Yeah, Learn You Some Erlang gets an average of 4800 unique visitors (or 41500 page views) a month according to awstats. There are about 100 (mostly idling) users in the #erlang channel on freenode and a few hundreds on the mailing lists. Th

That doesn't let you test ORM queries alone or controller code alone, though. They get bundled together and the testing is necessarily done on a higher level. I guess this can be acceptable in most situations.

I'm the guy maintaining the thing, and I'm complaining about ORMs not being perfect. I'm not sure I get your point.

I can see what you mean by the controller needing to know something about the objects it will obtain. It makes sense, although I guess we might disagree on how much info we want to let go through. I think predicting the length and scale of

Can't help but feel this is directed at the post. While I can definitely agree doing it for every single ORM call for maintenance purposes is sometimes overkill (some calls just are easy to refactor, or following a rule similar to "3-stri

I didn't know about Q objects before. What are their capabilities regarding, say, moving from an SQL database to a web-service or a third party application? I mean, this is the kind of stuff I have to do surprisingly often when maintaining

Try renaming a table column. Which one of the two has more impact on the code? Of course the same programmers can work from the model up to the view, but the idea is to reduce the impact of changes in lower layers, and help with testing. Th

I agree. Maybe I should have been clearer on my views. ORMs are a great tool; the way they are used with the leaky abstraction is what I have a problem with. Restricted to the model layer, they're entirely worth it and provide lots of help.

I get maybe a request every two months for a pdf version. It's something I always distantly planned but never thought on acting on it. I'm not really sure how to do it, but after the current chapter I'm working on, I might give it a try.

Yes, my comment wasn't meant to be totally serious. If static typing extensions were really used by everyone using Racket and/or Erlang, I wouldn't even have had to link to the extensions to begin with :)

The main point is usually about reliability and fault-tolerance. Distribution and concurrency are a bit of a lucky side-effect from that (and the standards that were in the telecom world back then). I'm exaggerating, but distribution came i

One of the problems with records (except the ugly syntax, especially with nested records) as a compile-time construct comes when you need to do hot loading of a module while keeping it running. The transition function using the record can n
