Not my tweet, but curious if anyone here knows what happened. Seems so unlikely, but possible via geolocation? iPhone 12.

Helpful rule of thumb: understand at least the level below the one you’re working on in good detail - that is, how it does what it does, not just what it can do. It helps you understand the shape of what is possible, debugging becomes far

I disagree, humans don’t need another equivalent intelligence in order to feel love and friendship towards it. My favourite tongue-in-cheek example: humans will feel love and kinship toward cats who can’t talk and to all appearances often c

You can estimate the probability distribution that generates this sequence as 0: 0, 1: 1. This is as far from 0: 0.5, 1: 0.5 (a fair coin toss) as you can get. Comparing mean and std dev can be used to estimate the distance between two dist

“Sequence looks random” is not nonsensical. The authors say your sequence should be indistinguishable from e.g. 12 coin tosses. This would have a uniform distribution. One approach would be estimate the probability distribution from the inp

I transitioned from being a tech lead to a manager. I hated it. I had an awkward conversation with my manager and we figured it was possible to switch back. Once I did that, I found I missed parts of management. I had an even more awkward c

The author wrote many technology introduction books over a period of six years. They probably have a limited lifespan. I think the comment is somewhat fair if overly snippish - “How I earn $27k per year writing books in my spare time” would

To be more precise: the author’s theory predicts that new technology moves design away from the things it makes cheap directly as a status symbol. In this case, DALL-E makes websites move away from images it can create. I contend novelty

Good read, but I can’t shake the feeling that the author ascribes too much to exactly one “vibe shift” in website design and unsplash’s role in it. Web design trends change every few years, for the same signalling reasons that fashion does.

This is not the consensus among ML researchers. Transformers are showing strong generalisation[1] and their performance continues to surprise us as they scale[2]. The Socratic paper is not about “higher intelligence”, it’s about demonstrati

Transformers are state-of-the-art for other language tasks - sentiment analysis, question and answering, document summarisation, translation etc. The shocking thing about GPT-3 was that it was close-ish to state of the art on many language

No, you do not get random crap from the GPT-3 API and you don’t have to tune the heat parameter, defaults are generally fine. You can get a unique formulation each time; this is generally seen as a feature rather than a bug, humans are typi

Add someone “in the know”, GPT-3 is more than a dictionary. I understand how language models mechanically work and have built and trained them, but the zero-shot capabilities of these large models were really unexpected. Interact with one.

Of course you can do that. You can even measure the angles and forces involved. There is no “unexplained physics” in bicycle riding. Dowsing for corpses, on the other hand, absolutely requires new physics, because the pseudo-physical explan

Why does pricing competitively to appear in the front page earn the label “bozo”? Should they prioritise the effects on the market ahead of their own profits or goals? It sounds like a really interesting story that’s missing a few steps due

I actually disagree, CLI is a big improvement. Vastly more developers are familiar with the command line than RStudio or IPython, including almost all of those who don’t already use some kind of ML. Two major benefits: * Approachability.

Probably suggesting people would start rat farms. Paying large bounties for bugs incentivises developers to introduce bugs for their “friends” to find. To some extent this dynamic must already exist, which is a troubling thought.
