In our case, I didn’t kick off the process because I would have to send a free laptop to the FSF and we can’t afford that yet. Maybe later. Also I’m not sure what the stance of RYF is regarding controller (non-CPU) firmware, as iMX8M needs

From my dogfooding experience, it really depends on what you need to run and what compromises you are willing to make. The biggest slowdowns I see with javascript-heavy web applications. Native applications like LibreOffice, GIMP, Inkscape,

Thanks for your questions and encouragement. Answers: 1. ~1.9kg fully loaded with batteries, WiFi card and SSD. 2. Currently you need to rebuild the firmware, which is "make" and then "flash.sh", but it's absolutely

That is incorrect. There is no updatable firmware blob in the chip that we use: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/sllseh2b/sllseh2b.pdf?&ts=158895831...

OK, I’ll look into that. Is that a good benchmark? Are there other meaningful ones?

Thanks, I’m honored to get your feedback. And yes, we’ll offer all parts separately and I hope they’ll be cloned, too!

Requires the same or similar controller blob (Xtensa) as HDMI on i.MX8M. Edit: To explain, the external DP/HDMI TX shares an IP block and even the signal lines. This is also a reason why we’re using a MIPI DSI->eDP converter chip fo

Yep I’d like to see an open SOM for Reform. If we are successful enough (re: cashflow/funding), it’s possible to do our own.

Yep, the original plan was to have an option with a Plastic Logic display. But the displays are expensive and an extra big project to get to work well for a general purpose computer. But an interesting option for later.

Yep, I believe that indie/boutique hardware that gives you some independence from the big corporate gardens will be an important thing.

SATA got eliminated for M.2 M-keyed (for NVMe SSD) in the redesign, see my other comment. mPCIe is still useful, because there are a lot of WiFi cards available in that formfactor that don't require firmware, for example.

Hi, this is where I regret not having updated that particular page in a longer time. While the goals remain the same, we have almost finished a complete redesign of the project. Here are some updates: https://mntre.com/media

You might run into address space issues. I haven’t checked Broadcom PCIe documentation for RPi4 (is there any?), but I tried a very similar hack with i.MX6 and older AMD and nVidia cards. They get recognized fine, but BARs cannot be mapped

It’s amazing to see this and the similarities to my Amiga VA2000 graphics card that I did many years later, but I swear I didn’t see this before. VA2000 did HDMI output and some very basic 2D acceleration. It’s now sold out. I just complete

This is strange. While MNT Reform still uses the i.MX6QP which is much older, I haven't seen such bad UI performance on it. I've seen consistently better perf from Qt apps or SDL/GL stuff than Gnome on this platform, so I hop

I love stuff like this. We made a whole laptop in this spirit, with a custom USB keyboard, optical trackball, motherboard and 3d printed/cnc milled case, also with KiCAD: https://mntmn.com/media/news_md/2019-0
