Code can screw up at scale. And at this point if you’re capable enough to understand the edge cases and offer insurance against them, the insurance went really cover that much.

If the jobs are truly unnecessary, the company and society will stop paying for them. If no one will do that work at a wage that the market will bear, then that job goes away. And from other comments it appears you only believe work happens

Because most of them enjoy doing it and their community directly benefits from the work. Not all pay for work is monetary, but firefighting is still work. And I just realized - maybe you hate your job. If that’s the case, go find something

In re-reading this thread, I realize something: if you move to Alaska to avoid being forced to work by society, you better damn well believe that you will be forced to work by nature. I think this says something about the very nature of wor

Alaska. You can move out there by yourself, do whatever the hell you want (as long as its by yourself and doesn’t impact others), and no one will notice or care. Or you can be a hermit.

It’s probably a 50-60 ft ravine and the bridge was probably 200ft long (these are guesstimates from just being around it). Edit: I just checked - it was 447 feet. Height is probably right, but I might be under by a bit.

It looked like light traffic on a morning commute. Unfortunate a bus was on there. But during rush hour, traffic is fully backed up there and stacked on the road. It could have easily been 30-40 cars + a bus instead of what was there.

This hits close to home… I’ve run under and over that bridge many, many times. I really hope no one was on their morning run under it, but it looks like everyone who was on it got away with minor injuries. It is a main artery for connecting

Not at all. I mean it is a lot of text for a comment and my tendency is to skim or skip the long ones. It was worth reading.

If you skipped this wall of text, stop and read it. Well said. Adding on, immunity declines over time, so to maintain it would either mean reinfection or booster…

There have been side effects from the vaccine, including documented cases of really bad reactions [1],[2]. I’m double vaxxed, boosted, and got covid. But to say the shot is without risks is disingenuous. That said, the risk of dying unvacci

There is a behavioral component. Is that because people who have caught it are more likely to take precautions against catching it again? Those who were vaccinated but previously uninfected may have had a “it can’t happen to me and if it do

It’s not easy and there may be a solution out there that I’m not aware of, but yubico met my needs (and Feitan) so I stopped. The principle I keep in mind here is that the implementation is the weakest part of crypto and has the most room f

I’m by no means an expert in this area (and expect someone here could speak to it better than I can), but the Yubikeys have a lot of capability. From their website: “Support for WebAuthn, FIDO2, FIDO U2F, smart card (PIV), Yubico OTP, OpenP

The FIDO2 two factor auth portion is pretty seamless. It’s plug into USB port when the two factor prompt comes up, it will light up, touch the button, and good to go. Everything else - good luck. Proprietary apps. Each one is slightly diffe

I’ll just chip in here - home ownership in the US seems to be priced right at the level people can barely afford - and it takes a ton of time and requires 30 years to pay off (or trade up in just a few). Home ownership is a way to keep peop

I don’t want to learn every point of sale system at every restaurant I go to. I sometimes have custom orders. If I screw something up, I want to be able to say, “sorry, can I change that?”. I have to touch a screen that others have touched.

I think about stagnating innovation, and think that Zoom/Webex focus tends to keep things in the status quo. I’ve just got a feeling that there will be some hidden cost to innovation at large companies (less chance encounters) and a hi

The submarine might burrow itself down into the Mariana Trench and then set them all off at the same time. This would open a crack in the ocean floor, draining the ocean. I’m studying how these things work where this guy went to school: ht

I’ll never forget that I was sitting outside the hallway before my SATs, and some random girl I just met offered me Adderall - I had 3 thoughts: 1) I’m not taking random pills from a stranger, let alone before the SATs 2) If it is adderall,
