Is this person intentionally trying to make the C harder to read? What's with all the missing newlines? I didn't get past the first few examples, because the C was so unnecessarily difficult to read, I assumed the Go was in similarly bad st

One of the great things about Linux in general is that this is non-news plenty of users who don't use the default window manager anyway. Prefer something else? Just switch. You're not married to the window manager like you are on OS X and W

For a while I was convinced that a distinct mustache (vs general unshavenness, etc) was a very strong indicator. It's amusing to watch yourself try to develop heuristics. (Edit: grammar.)

He put himself in a position where only chance protected him from a disaster. (Imagine if the update did trash the running server.) That's reason enough for a good sysadmin to be worried, IMO.

Interesting read. It reminds me that projects like monkeysphere ( http://web.monkeysphere.info ) are out there, which tries to address some of this.

Hiring qualified people is hard. Just because you're the applicant today doesn't mean you won't be an interviewer tomorrow. It's better for all of us if there's more communication about these things.

(And, I should mention, hopefully my notion that '08' is octal isn't shared by that many people, since '8' can't be part of an octal number...)

(a) Do you really think people only use 80x24 terminals today? (b) If the OP used an 80x24 terminal, then less(1) is his friend. Yes, small terminals are restrictive, but those who use them nowadays should also understand unix.

Sounds like he won't make that mistake again. This is as good an example of why people should RTFM as any. I'm sympathetic to the notion that cal(1) behaved counterintuitively, but at the same time, there's no obvious right answer here. Dif

denyhosts is configurable enough that I see no reason why it couldn't also work for other services. You'd probably have to hand-configure it (with a regex for each log type), though. That said, I've only ever used it for ssh.

libre.fm is cool, but the UI really disappointed me. The site does bad job explaining itself, and therefore only makes sense if you already use last.fm. The UI is crude (javascript links with 'href="#"' which bounce you up to the top of the

Perhaps this is overly simplistic, but by definition "work" is stuff I wouldn't do for free. I definitely do technical things for free, but I'm free to walk away any time -- I think the essence of "work" is the inability to walk away (witho

No, I wouldn't want to be part of a company that encouraged an oppressive new regime to rise to power, but I think that's a straw man. If an oppressive new regime rises, then it's bad because it's oppressive , and you couldn't blame it on

I agree in principle, but in this case there's one side attempting to cut off all uncontrolled communication in and out of the country. It seems like an easy choice to side against their position on communication.

Enforcement of the preference for inline replies has (as I understand it) waned greatly in recent years. As I understand it, people who began conversing over email seriously in the late 1990s or early 2000s are much less likely to have lear

What about rap music do you have an objection to? (I ask, very specifically, because you said "rap lyrics" and not, e.g., "music with immature lyrics".)

If not in age, at least in maturity. Who else bothers with these things when there's no extortion money involved? Seems like an interesting drill for sysadmins on both sides, though.

All of this is a lot more diluted when the workers you're talking about already make much more than is required for comfortable subsistence. It's one thing to talk about self-loathing hurting the cause of workers struggling to meet their ba

This situation fascinates me. CA has been ignoring federal law for a long time w.r.t medical marijuana. IIRC, during Bush, the feds actually did raid the medical marijuana dispensaries. (Glancing at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia

I'll further focus on one point in the post: The author took it as a given that the code with short column names was "less readable". Why? Surely he wasn't repeating the literal field names again and again in the code? In the last DB-intens

This is a good example of the maxim that everything should be "as simple as possible, but no simpler" (Einstein). Sometimes identifying where things have become too simple is difficult.

I think changing firewall rules remotely is one of those things where it pays to be extra-careful, and then make sure you have access to the console (or physical access) for when you inevitably mess it up and lock yourself out.
