If they're describing the Moody paper I'm thinking of, this is _Chains of Affection_. Here's a link (PDF!): http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.131...

I don't understand why mahmoudimus's comment (my sibling) was killed. I've been considering trying to re-map my muscle memory to use ^C or ^[ instead of escape in vi, largely because my capslock key is an extra control. Considering how much

An important distinction that's missing in this discussion is that you can be either an SA-SRE or a SWE-SRE. You can figure out which is which from how the SRE job postings on google.com are phrased. SWE-SREs have to pass SWE interviews. I

One qualitative difference: the "I'm feeling lucky" button (which you can use if you hit right-arrow on a search suggestion) has actually become useful. You can start typing, scroll down to an entry you like, and check the snippet of the to

The interesting part, to me, was the difference in what "upstanding citizen" means, clothing-wise, depending on your position on the case. I hadn't thought about it much, and I was guilty of assuming more dressed-up was always better.

I like this article. I wish, however, that it didn't include the little interpretations in the second half of each section. I think it would be more powerful, and honest, if they weren't there.

I think I first learned about Erdos when I learned a prof who taught one of my undergrad CS courses looked after Erdos for a while -- handling his finances, etc. He was the one who bet Erdos he couldn't quit amphetamines for a month (and tu

(This probably both offends both Perl people and C++ people. Here goes.) I think writing clean, readable, modern Perl is like writing clean, readable, modern C++: it's _all_ about what language features you avoid using. Writing good code is

I wasn't sure if they quoted that blog seriously, or as an example of bedbug infestations inciting xenophobia. (The xenophobia undoubtedly existed beforehand, but that, as they say, is neither here nor there.)

I agree wholeheartedly with this article, and the PG article that preceded it. I try very hard to avoiding owning more than I must. Big moves and traveling help tremendously with this. When I moved to New York city from southern California,

Well said. The point that Wall Street != New York is particularly important here, w.r.t Antonio's post. I've only been here a year, but I know New York is big , and it is not homogeneous. I don't think Antonio ever realized that. Also, k

The comment above (and piaw's reply) should be getting more attention. He's not talking about overall work experience. He's talking about promotion . In my experience so far, Google is not the kind of company that's going to come find you

It's a fairly vanilla mutt+fetchmail+procmail setup. Complicated compared to an all-in-one email application, but not if you're used to separating MUAs (e.g., mutt) and MDAs (e.g., procmail). (EDIT: Oh, and I agree with my sibling about IMA

I disagree that it's evil . If you're a company doing business with other big, powerful companies (telcos), you can't just attack their business model and expect to keep doing business with them unless you're in a really strong position. S

UI is always a mix of usability and discoverability, I think. The color wheel is perfectly usable, but little changes might affect discoverability. That said, I think far too many UIs (window managers, etc) confuse the two. I'm only a newbi
