This is exactly right. Also, the selection of ebooks at my local library is terrible. I always look for an ebook first, but I've never yet found an ebook version of a book I actually wanted to read in my library's catalog.

As I recall, GADTs are also touched on, but I agree that I still want more of all of these things.

Maybe the tacit assumption here is that I'm doing development for Android and iOS; I'm currently interested in neither, although I do think F# is a compelling language and I'd love to be able to advocate for it at my workplac

Here's the problem: it's too expensive to learn on my own, and I can't advocate for C#, F# or Mono without already being an expert. Yes, I am a professional software engineer, and I support my family that way. But I have ot

I had a number in my Javascript variable once and it took a lot more than jQuery to get it back out.

It's also weird that I'm most endorsed for some of my weakest skills. Everyone thinks I'm a great Python programmer except me, it seems.

Linked in is a very strange world; maybe it's good for job seekers or recruiters, but I find that the most frequent interactions I have there are either recruiters contacting me for ridiculous jobs that I would never be interested in (

That's a neat idea. But in the case that the server doesn't have them zipped, I'm not sure that the blanket statement made in the blog post is really right, either.

I think you hit the nail on the head. One other thing I'd add was that these new tools forced developers to build tooling around their databases, too. No more ad-hoc query system (like sqldeveloper, or the many fine web tools) where yo

The real problem with C# is that it is still basically Windows-specific. Yes, Mono is out there, but have you actually tried to build a Mono app without using Xamarin? Have you looked at what the Xamarin licenses cost? Once your project rea

You're not missing anything. The people who are taking actions based on the correlations (i.e., treating them as causes) are probably missing something though.

It's good to see Scala getting some love after all those "i hate scala" rants (many of which seemed to be written by people who haven't spent much time with the language). We're using it at work for essentially all

What I really should have said was that whenever I use myself as an example of the "typical consumer", I'm inevitably making a wrong decision based on some idiosyncrasy.

I never really got tablets - too big to be portable and crippled by the lack of usable input devices. My 11" Macbook Air is just about as portable as an iPad, but is way easier to use, not just for streaming, but even for coding, etc

Certainly. As I said, I like Clojure, but I'd be happy to be able to program in Scheme as well. I guess the history of LISP should have told me that not all people who like one LISP necessarily don't mind using another.
