I am a "business guy" who was proficient in PHP. Here's what I did: - Bought a beginning Ruby book and gave it a quick perusal to get a handle on the fundamentals - Went through Michael Hartl's amazing Rails Tutorial (I skipped over some o

Speaking personally, the biggest challenge with multiple projects is the ease with which you can switch from one to the other and still feel productive. Encounter something unpleasant that needs to get done? Switch and work on the other pr

This is a huge acquisition for eBay. It will bring them much closer to merchants and retailers. I'm a little surprised they didn't try to hold on to more of Rue La La--I'm assuming because they didn't want to cannibalize their own fashion

I'm not to familiar with evolutionary psychology, but this looks interesting (and it's on the Kindle for less the $10). Added it to my reading list--thanks!

Read "Why She Buys" by Bridget Brennan. It is probably one of the most enlightening marketing/consumer psych. books I have ever read. I seriously cannot recommend it highly enough. Also, it's not just about the female consumer--there's dis

There is definitely a balance between speed and quality. The author here is advocating methods that will enable a single founder to push out an MVP as quickly as possible (while still maintaining some degree of aesthetic appeal). The reci

Amazing--I've worked on projects before where if the barriers to integrating with existing solutions were lower, phone verification would have really helped. This is an awesome example of a niche problem, with an elegantly simple solution.

The quality was different however. 2D bar codes couldn't really take off in the US until mobiles came with hi-res cameras with macrofocus. As evidenced by the ubiquity of QR in Japan, Japan was pretty far ahead of the US in that regard.

Interesting point on embedding numeric IDs. Looking at the Backcountry.com example, have you ever attempted to place all content one level beneath the domain (i.e. all content has a directory depth of 1)? - Category: http://www.backcountr

This appears to be UK only. Apparently Staples did a similar promotion for US-based stores a couple of years ago (along with free business card printing) http://www.centernetworks.com/staples-free-resume-printing-b...

BofA uses something similar when transferring funds between accounts--a unique code is texted to a registered mobile device to complete the transfer. It seems feasible that they could extend the technology to logins.

Have you noticed much fallout from the recent redesign? It seems like there was a huge amount of outrage (mainly from organizers) [1], but I'm guessing that the lack of competitors means that meetup organizers are left with no viable alter

I'm not judging you, but an activity where you view your "customers" as prey seems really depressing. I certainly couldn't sleep at night knowing I was taking advantage of people yearning for some happiness in their lives.

The author of this article wrote a interesting book chronicling his experiences at HBS. It's a quick read and helpful for anyone considering B-school (skip over the technical chapters and focus on the anecdotes). I don't agree completely
