"So and so has endorsed you for XML and Microsoft Office!" Every time I get one of these emails I come a little bit closer to closing my LinkedIn account. A LinkedIn replacement in the form of about.me sounds pretty appealing right now.

I think before you go around slamming the VC culture in this particular thread, you might want to consider that Jody Sherman was well into his forties when he founded Ecomom.

I started using data.table [1] as a replacement for data.frame recently and it's hugely improved my productivity in R. On the web front, the Shiny [2] project has a emerged as a possibility for quickly building web frontends for analysis p

Several people commenting here have X220s. Anyone have one with the IPS panel? Is it worth it? I hate how the colors on my laptop shift as my viewing angle changes.

The command line SQL client is one place Postgres blows away Oracle. I'd pay real money for psql on Oracle.

It's worth noting that Cosma Shalizi has been doing this for about six years now, and it's becoming increasingly popular in certain areas of academia. Background: http://masi.cscs.lsa.umich.edu/~crshalizi/weblog/442.html http://masi.cscs

Neither "lean" nor "agile" appear in this blog post. Someone should fix the link text on HN, which is currently "Is an obsession with Lean and Agile killing true innovation?"

They are shooting for a 330 minute ETOPS for the 787. That means a plane can be up to 6.5 hours from the closest airport on long haul flights. ETOPS has more to do with engine reliability than fire safety, but I can't help wonder if this

Wow this is pretty cool. I have written some C (NXC, really [1]) programs for Mindstorms and it was super fun. I built a little rover-like car and wrote a program that would make the car play with my cat in the living room. It didn't wor

C pointer aliasing defeats certain compiler optimizations that can be made in other languages, and is frequently brought up in C vs FORTRAN comparisons. I think that's probably what the GP had in mind.

If you were a programmer in the days before C had prototypes then you are definitely from the old school. If you're working on code that still looks like this in 2012 then maybe it's time to brush up on modern C. ;-)
