I remember doing this because I thought it would teach me to be proficient with Linux. After hours of spamming compilers and watching things build, I gave up. I realise now what I was trying to learn was how to use a Unix system, ie shell c

Docker is open source though... How is this different to Red Hat and Podman?

The issue with this is that it's no longer covered by Red Hat's support and lifecycle, which is why most people pay for RHEL anyway.

Mainly I use it for starting services in some kind of order with compose files, but other than that I believe you're correct, it only does anything at startup. It doesn't restart containers that become unhealthy it seems.

Yeah fair enough, if you're in a situation where you have several unprivileged users sharing a VM or something than it makes sense. I haven't come across that yet personally.

Yeah, I do agree about the pods. IMO pods are a better primitive than a single container, so its cool Podman supports them.

The socket doesn't give you the benefits of a long-running daemon though, namely: Healthchecks and automatic restarts, and the ability to run containers beyond rebooting. Podman can do those things but it leverages systemd timers and u

I kinda feel bad for Docker. The prevailing wisdom seems to be that you shouldn't be using Docker anymore, use Podman. Often the reasons for this is that Podman is daemonless, supports rootless containers, etc. But I feel this is mispl

I think in 50 years if Microsoft is still around, it’ll probably be because of .NET. For a company I have very little time for, .NET is an exceptionally awesome tool and ecosystem.

I’ll offer my own anecdote, which was 1 on 1s with a manager who was really just soliciting feedback about the team, how I was going, what I thought we could do better. Now I don’t have them due to a new job, I miss them dearly.

Expect performance issues when running RabbitMQ with persistence? What kind of issues? Also the comment about Redis not being persistent, Redis has lots of persistence options that allow you to choose trade offs between durability and perfo

This matches my experience. Last time I changed jobs, the questions I asked were all thinly veiled scenarios to draw out whether as a developer I’d have the agency to do things without micromanagement. My now team lead saw through this pret

My only problem with LWN is that it’s so good, I get upset there’s nothing even close to the quality of it for the other hobbies/interests in my life.

I feel like these marketplaces could maybe justify 30% on the purchase of an app up front, where there are clear benefits to the exposure and platform offered by them. But ongoing revenue is really attributable to the app itself and feels

I really don't understand the use case of NFTs for in game assets. How is using a block chain to trade assets an improvement over the in game marketplaces we already have for games like TF2, DotA2, etc?

I tried PDM earlier this year and there's a few things worth noting: - PEP582 which it is based on is still in draft, and some tools (VS Code) won't fully support it until it's accepted. - If you want to develop or test using

Exposing a setuid program that prints the file would be more dangerous though. The result is the same (you can read /etc/passwd) except now you have a vector for gaining root access through an exploit to this setuid program.

Containers may not be a security boundary yet, but they do promise a level of security and even though the kernel and various runtimes may not be there yet, one day they will be. Every time there's a container escape or privilege escal
